Prime Video’s New Anti-War Thriller The Tank Has Defeated Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun

A new war thriller, The Tank, has quickly become the most popular title on Prime Video. The anti-war film premiered on January 2nd and immediately rose to the top of the streaming charts.

According to FlixPatrol, the new film The War has quickly become more popular than Liam Neeson’s latest movie. It started gaining traction immediately, appearing in fourth place globally and seventh in the U.S. within just two days. Now, in only a few days, it’s already climbed to the top spot.

The new war movie is currently number two globally, but it hasn’t yet surpassed Dave Bautista’s action film, Trap House. Trap House has been the top film all year, though The Tank is gaining momentum and could take the lead soon.

The Tank was Amazon’s first German-language film to play in German cinemas before becoming available on the streaming service. It premiered in Germany on September 18, 2025, but wasn’t shown in theaters anywhere else.

Dennis Gansel directed the war thriller The Tank, working from a screenplay he co-wrote with Colin Teevan. The film features performances by David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Tilman Strauß, and André M. Hennicke. It was a production of Amazon MGM Studios Germany and Pantaleon Films.

Set during the brutal fighting on the Eastern Front of World War II in 1943, The Tank follows a crew operating secretly behind enemy lines. As they push further into enemy territory, the soldiers confront not only external dangers but also their own personal struggles. Fueled by methamphetamine used by the German army, their mission spirals into a harrowing descent into darkness.

Despite being a hit with viewers on streaming services, the war film The Tank hasn’t gained much notice from professional movie critics. It currently has no official reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and its audience score is only 58%. It fares a little better on IMDb, where it has a rating of 6.6 out of 10.

The Naked Gun Was a Successful Reboot

The popular franchise began in the 1980s with the TV show Police Squad!, starring Leslie Nielsen. He continued the role in three movies, with the last one released in 1994. More than thirty years later, Liam Neeson stepped into the role of Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Nielsen’s original character.

Critics loved The Naked Gun, giving it an 87% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating, while audiences scored it at 72%. The movie also did very well financially, earning $102.1 million at the box office despite a $42 million production budget.

I recently watched a film directed by Akiva Schaffer, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. It was great seeing Will Ferrell alongside a fantastic cast including Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Danny Huston – they all really brought the story to life.
