While many lesser-known Spider-Man characters haven’t quite fit into the live-action movies, Spider-Noir has potential. The upcoming TV series will bring to life the version of Spider-Man famously voiced by Nicolas Cage in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and is expected to include several other Marvel characters as well.
Silvermane, Black Cat, Sandman, and Robbie Robertson are confirmed to be present. It’s currently unknown who else will appear, but considering the world Nicolas Cage’s character inhabits, Solo – a popular anti-hero from 1990s Spider-Man comics – is a strong possibility.
Solo Is Like The Punisher, But With Super Powers
First appearing in Web of Spider-Man #16 in 1989, James Bourne, known as Solo, is a vigilante who fights crime with guns while wearing green. He’s similar to the Punisher, but instead of targeting all criminals, Solo focuses specifically on terrorists. His motto reflects this: “While Solo lives…terror dies!”
Unlike the Punisher, Solo has a genuine superhuman ability: he can teleport. This power comes from a cybernetic implant he received while working with a government counter-terrorism team. Combined with his skills in gunfighting and military strategy, this makes Solo a very dangerous and formidable opponent.
Driven by the loss of loved ones to terrorism, Solo is obsessed with killing all terrorists, which frequently brings him into conflict with Spider-Man. This dynamic mirrors Spider-Man’s complicated relationship with the Punisher.
Like the Punisher, both Solo and Spider-Man have discovered they share some common goals. While Spider-Man doesn’t approve of Solo’s violent tactics, he understands that Solo’s opponents are also dangerous to him.
Solo Would Be A Perfect Fit For Prime Video’s Spider-Man Show
Considering the Solo character’s brooding personality, he would fit perfectly into Prime Video’s Spider-Noir series. The show intentionally blends superhero stories with the dark and gritty style of film noir. Because of this, it’s a good idea for Spider-Noir to explore some of the more complex and troubled characters from Spider-Man’s comic books.
Given his difficult past and tendency towards violence, it would be easy to connect the character Solo to the events in the Spider-Noir story. A plotline could easily feature Cage’s character investigating murders that ultimately lead back to Solo’s self-appointed mission against those he considers “terrorists.”
This storyline in Spider-Noir could result in Ben Reilly gaining a powerful enemy or a valuable ally as he moves forward. It might also introduce a compelling, Punisher-esque rival for the Spider-Man character in the Prime Video series.
