Prime Video’s 3-Part Fantasy Series Based On A Best-Selling Novel Is One Of Its Best

Even though season 3 of Good Omens hasn’t come out yet, the Prime Video series is quickly becoming a standout in its genre. Creating a successful fantasy comedy is tricky, particularly for television. Fantasy shows need significant funding, detailed world-building, and a tone that balances seriousness with humor to make audiences connect with fantastical elements like dragons and elves.

As a big movie and TV fan, I’ve noticed comedy shows really live or die on how much pure fun they deliver – they can’t get too bogged down in being serious. That’s especially true for fantasy comedies. They have this tricky balancing act: they need to be dramatic and funny, silly and serious, impactful and irreverent all at once. Take His Dark Materials on HBO – it’s great, but it leans into being dark and mysterious. A fantasy comedy? It has to make fun its priority.

Good Omens Is A Perfect Blend of Fantasy and Comedy

The Prime Video and BBC series Good Omens brilliantly combines serious themes with humor. The show centers on Crowley, a demon played by David Tennant, and Aziraphel, an angel portrayed by Michael Sheen, who are dismayed to learn that the end of the world is approaching. Both have grown accustomed to their comfortable lives on Earth.

Crowley and Aziraphel team up to try and prevent the predicted war between Heaven and Hell, hoping to maintain their comfortable lifestyle on Earth. However, their efforts are complicated by a large and diverse group of characters – heroes, villains, demons, angels, and humans – who constantly interfere with their plans.

Good Omens Has One Of Fantasy TV’s Most Impressive Casts Ever

David Tennant and Michael Sheen have fantastic chemistry, and their clever back-and-forth could easily carry the show. But the dynamic is completed by Jon Hamm as the angel Gabriel, along with the rest of the incredibly talented supporting cast of Good Omens.

The show features a fantastic cast, including comedy star Nick Offerman as Thaddeus Dowling, Frances McDormand as the voice of God and narrator, and Anna Maxwell Martin and Shelley Conn as Beelzebub. Many other well-known actors also appear, such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Derek Jacobi, Jack Whitehall, Mark Gatiss, and Brian Cox.

The cast of Good Omens is truly outstanding – one of the best ever put together for a fantasy show. But it’s not just a list of famous names; every actor gets a moment to stand out. The story is wonderfully chaotic, and as Crowley and Aziraphale get into trouble, we meet a constant stream of interesting new characters.

Good Omens Season 3 Can Still Have A Satisfying Ending

Despite already being a critically praised show after its second season, Good Omens season 3 has faced significant issues since 2024. That year, Neil Gaiman, the co-author of the original novel and the show’s creator, was publicly accused of sexual abuse and assault by multiple women, with allegations spanning several decades.

Because of this, the third season has been shortened to just one episode, scheduled for release in May 2026. Luckily, the show has already covered most of its main storyline, so this shorter final season shouldn’t significantly impact the overall story of Good Omens.
