
Following a record-breaking start, Prime Video has announced what will happen with the series. It launched in early March, and it took the streaming service over a month to make a decision about its future.
Good news for fans eager to see how Moriarty becomes a villain! Prime Video has confirmed that Young Sherlock will be back for a second season. The show reunited Guy Ritchie with the Sherlock Holmes universe after his two films, and he’ll be involved as an executive producer and director. Ritchie will also direct the first episode of the new season.
The show’s first season launched on March 6th and quickly became incredibly popular. Even after a month, the mystery continues to gain viewers, making it one of Prime Video’s most successful original series ever – reaching number one in 95 countries and attracting 45 million viewers.
What Happens in Young Sherlock?
This new eight-part series tells the story of how Sherlock Holmes became the famous detective he is known as. It begins with his brother, Mycroft, helping him out of prison and getting him a job cleaning at Oxford University. While there, he meets and becomes friends with a young James Moriarty, years before Moriarty turns into a criminal.
At first, Sherlock and Moriarty aren’t enemies at all – they quickly become friends. They team up, using their unique talents to investigate a global mystery that unexpectedly hits close to home for Sherlock.
Peter Friedlander, who leads global television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed immense satisfaction with the new murder mystery series. He believes “Young Sherlock” possesses a special quality, captivating millions of viewers worldwide not just with its mystery, but with the story of how a legendary character came to be.
Friedlander praised Richie and Matthew Parkhill for successfully reimagining Sherlock Holmes’s youth as exciting, risky, and completely captivating. He also highlighted their intriguing portrayal of James Moriarty, which promises a compelling storyline for the future, and expressed enthusiasm for Season 2.
Young Sherlock Was a Smash Hit
The trailer for the most popular series on Prime Video garnered over 223 million views in its first week, creating huge anticipation for the show’s release. The series itself has received a solid 84% approval rating based on 50 reviews.
Viewers generally liked the show’s beginning, with an approval rating of 83%. Despite competition from other popular Prime Video series like Scarpetta, Invincible, and The Boys, Young Sherlock quickly became a hit, both in the United States and worldwide.
Young Sherlock features Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the lead role, with Dónal Finn (known from The Wheel of Time) playing Moriarty. The cast also includes Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), Natascha McElhone (Halo), Max Irons (Condor), and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech).
Young Sherlock Season 1 is streaming on Prime Video. Season 2 doesn’t have a release date.
