Prime Video is lassoing a new Western series with Glen Powell.
After crime shows, Westerns are having a big moment on television. The success of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner, really sparked this trend, and now many streaming services are creating their own unique takes on the classic Western story.
Prime Video is creating a new crime thriller called Calamities, set in Texas. David Weil will write, direct, and oversee the show as its showrunner, and will also be an executive producer. Glen Powell and Dan Cohen’s Barnstorm production company is co-producing, along with Amazon MGM Studios. Calamities will stream exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries around the world.

Prime Video describes the upcoming series, Calamities, as a fast-paced and exciting Texas crime thriller. The story begins with a drug deal gone wrong, sparking violence and throwing a peaceful border town into chaos. At the center of the conflict are a sheriff haunted by her past, a dangerous hitwoman, an ambitious FBI agent, and a particularly brutal faction of a drug cartel. The cast has not yet been announced.
David Weil not only created the series but also served as its showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer, building on his previous work with the Prime Video thriller Hunters. He’s joined as an executive producer by Natalie Laine Williams, through their shared production company, Please Enjoy. Glen Powell and Dan Cohen of Barnstorm also executive produce, with Ryan Schwartz as co-executive producer.
