Tom Clancy likely would have enjoyed the Amazon Prime Video series starring Jack Ryan. John Krasinski’s performance as the CIA analyst was so well-received that he’s now back in a full-length movie, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, even four years after the show ended.
Just because something is popular doesn’t automatically mean it’s good. That’s not to knock Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – it’s definitely an exciting show! But Amazon Prime has a lot of other action series that might actually be better.
Reacher Kicks More Butt Than Jack Ryan Ever Could
For years, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan was considered the ultimate action hero named “Jack” in literature. It looked like he’d stay on top when the Jack Ryan series debuted on Amazon Prime Video. But then Amazon introduced Lee Child’s Jack Reacher—a character just as smart, but much more physically imposing—in the Reacher series, shaking things up.
At 6’3″ and 240 pounds, Alan Ritchson is a much more physical fit for the character of the former Army Ranger than Tom Cruise, who previously played Jack Reacher. Ritchson gives a compelling performance – he’s both intimidating and surprisingly likable – which keeps the show exciting even during quieter moments between the action.
Viewers who enjoy watching the imposing, wandering hero deliver his forceful style of justice will be pleased to hear that Season 4 of Reacher is planned for 2026.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Is A Uniquely Sleek, But Grounded, Spy Drama
What makes Jack Ryan – and most adaptations of Tom Clancy’s work – appealing is its more realistic take on spying, compared to the over-the-top action of James Bond films. The ideal spy series would combine that realism with a sense of style and excitement, similar to what Mr. & Mrs. Smith achieves, creating a thrilling and believable world.
Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane are reinventing the action thriller previously starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Their new series follows two undercover agents—played by Glover and Maya Erskine—who pretend to be married while carrying out dangerous missions.
The situation gets interesting when the fake relationship between the characters starts to feel genuine. This new season of the Prime Video series will explore this with Mark Eydelshteyn (known from Anora) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) taking on new roles.
The Boys Features Some Of TV’s Wildest Action Sequences
While Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is praised for its realistic portrayal of global politics, it doesn’t offer much in the way of escapism. A story with similar themes but presented symbolically and set in a fantastical world could provide a greater sense of escape.
As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve been really into Amazon’s The Boys. It’s based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and the premise is wild: it follows a group of vigilantes who are up against superheroes who are either seriously corrupt or just straight-up bad guys, and they’re backed by powerful corporations. What’s really striking is how brutally satirical it is – it hits pretty close to home sometimes, even with all the over-the-top superpowers, like, seriously weird ones! It’s a show that definitely makes you think, and maybe squirm a little.
On that note, the surreal are some of the most creative and thrilling in recent memory.
World War II-Era Conflicts Continue In The 1970s-Set Hunters
I really appreciated the serious and intricate storylines in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. It definitely wasn’t a show that shied away from complexity. But honestly, while I was invested, I sometimes wished it would lighten up a bit – a little bit of fun could have really elevated the series, you know?
Inspired by shows like Hunters, the new series starring Al Pacino takes a bold, sometimes over-the-top approach. Created by David Weil and produced by Jordan Peele, the show follows a Holocaust survivor in 1970s New York City who assembles a team to track down and eliminate hidden Nazis.
While Hunters is based on real-life events, it doesn’t hesitate to embrace the over-the-top and imaginative aspects of its story about seeking revenge.
Hanna Feels Like Tom Clancy’s Take On The YA Genre
Initially, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan tells the story of an unassuming hero who prefers the safety of his office to dangerous field work. About a year later, Amazon Prime Video introduced another unexpected hero with Hanna, adapting the film for television.
I’m so excited about this new series! It’s created by David Farr, who actually co-wrote the original movie from 2011 – the one with a young Saoirse Ronan. The story centers around this incredible 15-year-old girl from Finland. She was given a super soldier serum before she was even born, and then basically trained to be an assassin right from the start of her life. It’s a really unique and intense premise!
Esme Creed-Miles is fantastic in the lead role of this thrilling, fast-paced movie. It features impressive fight scenes and a tough, determined spirit, but also surprisingly heartfelt moments that many viewers have praised.
Invincible Is Unlike Any Other Animated Superhero Series
Animation is often overlooked when it comes to action, but it offers incredible possibilities. It lets creators bring any fantastical idea to life within their stories, and surprisingly, this can make even the wildest action sequences feel more believable.
Viewers might actually be more captivated by the action in Invincible compared to Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. It’s unusual to compare these two shows – a realistic thriller to an animated series based on Robert Kirkman’s popular comic book about a young superhero (voiced by Steven Yeun) trying to follow in the footsteps of his famous crime-fighting father (voiced by J.K. Simmons).
Despite its intense violence, the show is beautifully made, features fantastic voice acting, and has a clever story. This quality puts it in the same league as live-action Amazon Prime Video series like Jack Ryan, and deserves to be considered alongside them.
