I’ve been noticing DC’s been doing some really cool, unexpected things with their classic characters lately. It’s not just the heroes either – they’re reimagining the villains too! And honestly, one of the craziest and most interesting takes I’ve seen so far is in this comic called Immortal Legend Batman.
In Immortal Legend Batman #4, Bruce Wayne encounters a new villain named Jake, also known as The Poisoned Man. Jake has an unusual connection to all plant life on his planet. It’s clear to comic book readers that this character is a reimagining of Poison Ivy, with a gender swap.
Poison Ivy, created in 1966 by Robert Kanigher, Sheldon Moldoff, and Carmine Infantino, is a Batman villain originally conceived as an ecoterrorist. Over the years, her character has changed, but she’s consistently portrayed with the power to control plants and a captivating charm she uses to achieve her goals.
The classic portrayal of Poison Ivy, particularly her ability to captivate others, is still evident in the current storyline, The Poisoned Man. In Immortal Legend Batman #4, written by Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom, Erica D’Urso’s artwork presents Jake as strikingly attractive and almost angelic, but he doesn’t immediately seem to have a seductive effect on Batman.
There’s a moment where The Poisoned Man seems to develop a strong connection with Batman, hinting at a possible attraction. However, it’s equally likely that his kiss is simply a deadly tactic – one of his powers involves killing people with a kiss.
Immortal Legend Batman Has Plenty More Intriguing Character Changes
Jake, also known as The Poisoned Man, is a good example of a villain from the Immortal Legend Batman series. For example, the first issue of the Elseworlds storyline features a Western-themed planet where Harvey Dent is the mayor and Bruce Wayne is the sheriff.
The real Bruce Wayne, secretly Batman, exposes him as a fake – someone pretending to be Batman to conceal his true identity as one of many otherworldly villains called “shadows.” Immediately after, half of his body transforms into his shadow form, effectively making this imposter the continuity’s version of Two-Face, rather than Harvey Dent.
The new series offers a fascinating take on Batman. While Bruce Wayne remains the wealthy orphan who fights crime with allies like Nightwing and Robin, it’s revealed that he’s not the original Batman. The mantle of ‘The Batman’ has been passed down through generations of vigilantes, creating a myth of an enduring, almost immortal legend, similar to characters like The Phantom.
This refers to the type of content seen in shows like Super Sentai, which became Power Rangers in the United States. The main character’s outfit is clearly inspired by the costumes worn by those heroes.
This series is set in the future, where humans have colonized other planets. However, their technology has accidentally opened a connection to a dark, alternate dimension. Fortunately, Batman has learned to control the energy linking these two worlds, allowing him to hunt down and defeat dangerous creatures called ‘shadows’.
Immortal Legend Batman #4 is now on sale.
