Poker Face Canceled By Peacock: Rian Johnson Shops Series With New Lead

Despite its creator, Rian Johnson (known for Knives Out), Peacock has canceled Poker Face after two seasons. The show starred Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a woman who can instinctively detect lies and uses this skill to solve murders while on the road across America.

Sources at Deadline report that Peacock has canceled Poker Face after two seasons. However, the show’s creator, Rian Johnson, is shopping the series to other networks, hoping to secure a deal for two more seasons. In a surprising development, Peter Dinklage is being considered to replace Natasha Lyonne as the lead character, Charlie Cale.

So, I just heard from Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne – and Natasha’s still going to be involved as an executive producer, which is great news! They put out a statement, and here’s what they had to say…

We started planning this next step as soon as we finished the second season. We’re really excited about Poker Face and believe this is the perfect way to continue the story. Stay tuned – you might just see Charlie Cale back on the road again soon.

It’s currently unknown if Tony Tost will continue to lead the show creatively, or if a new showrunner will be hired for the upcoming changes. However, Poker Face is a passion project for Rian Johnson, and he intends to be heavily involved in both the writing and directing to ensure the show’s continuation.

I’m so excited for the future of Poker Face! I heard Rian Johnson’s plan is to bring in a new lead actor every couple of seasons, and Peter Dinklage is kicking things off – what a fantastic choice! I know some people were surprised by the idea of switching leads, but honestly, TV has done this a lot. Think back to shows like Bewitched, or even more recently, The Crown and Doctor Who. They all reinvented the lead character, and it worked! I think it’s a really clever way to keep the show fresh and interesting for years to come.

Like the Sherlock Holmes series, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films feature a different group of suspects in each movie, all investigated by Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc. The third film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will be available on Netflix starting December 12th.

It’s surprising that Poker Face was canceled, especially since its second season was a hit on Peacock. While it was expensive to produce and viewership dipped slightly from its first season – which received four Emmy nominations, including one for Natasha Lyonne as Lead Actress in a Comedy – the show’s costs were comparable to other series with similar production values and cast sizes.

Despite the cancellation of Poker Face after two seasons and Natasha Lyonne’s departure, the character Charlie Cale’s story isn’t necessarily over, suggesting there could be future adventures.
