Pokémon Winds & Waves Gen 10 Starters: Everything We Know

The first trailer showed what Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua look like, but now we’re learning more about who they are.

Starter Pokémon are really important at the beginning of each new game generation, as they often become a player’s main partner throughout their adventure. While choosing a Starter isn’t as crucial now – with breeding and online trading making it easier to get any Pokémon – it used to be a big deal. Players revisiting older games like Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch have discovered just how much harder it was to collect all the Starter Pokémon in those original versions.

Pokémon Winds & Waves Starter Pokémon Revealed

Honestly, as a fan, I’m really curious to see if the new Pokémon games (Gen 10) will have some kind of cool battle feature like Mega Evolution or Dynamax – and if these new Starter Pokémon will be connected to it in any way. We just don’t know yet!

You can select from three different starters, and they represent the classic types that have been featured in all the main Pokémon games, excluding Pokémon Yellow and the Let’s Go games.

Browt Is The Gen 10 Grass-Type Starter

Browt is the Grass-type Pokémon you can choose as your starter in the Pokémon Winds & Waves game. Here are its known base stats:

Category Bean Chick Pokémon
Type Grass
Height 1′ (0.3 m)
Weight 7.7 lbs. (3.5 kg)
Ability Overgrow

Overgrow is a Pokémon ability that makes Grass-type attacks more powerful when the Pokémon is low on health. It does this by increasing either the Pokémon’s Attack or Special Attack.

The name ‘Browt’ combines ‘bean’ and ‘sprout,’ and also alludes to the prominent ridge above its eyes, resembling a plant stalk. Given its bean-inspired design, it’s possible Browt’s final evolved form will be more floral than Decidueye, the previous Grass-type Starter Pokémon’s final evolution.

Pombon Is The Gen 10 Fire-Type Starter

Pombom is the Fire-type Pokémon you start with in the new game, Pokémon Winds & Waves. Here are its known base stats:

Category Puppy Pokémon
Type Fire
Height 1′4″ (0.4 m)
Weight 14.8 lbs. (6.7 kg)
Ability Blaze

Blaze makes Fire-type attacks more powerful when a Pokémon is low on health, by increasing either its Attack or Special Attack stat.

Pombon looks like a Pomeranian, and its name might come from the word “bonfire” because of its flame-like fur. It’s expected to evolve into a large, fluffy dog that either bursts into flames or breathes fire.

Gecqua Is The Gen 10 Water-Type Starter

Gecqua is the Water-type Pokémon you begin your adventure with in Pokémon Winds & Waves. Here are its currently known base stats:

Category Water Gecko Pokémon
Type Water
Height 1′ (0.3 m)
Weight 9.5 lbs. (4.3 kg)
Ability Torrent

Torrent is a Pokémon ability that makes Water-type attacks more powerful when the Pokémon is at low health, by increasing either its Attack or Special Attack.

The Pokémon Gecqua’s name combines “gecko” and “aqua,” simply hinting it’s a water-type lizard. Fans are now wondering if its evolved form will walk on four legs or stand on two, similar to Greninja and Inteleon, as it shares characteristics with them.
