Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, has discussed the possibility of characters from that world appearing in his new show, Pluribus. Starring Rhea Seehorn (known from Better Call Saul), Pluribus centers on Carol, who fights against a strange new reality after a mysterious signal from space alters the minds of almost everyone else, making them calm and content.
As a fan, I have to say Pluribus is a total departure from Breaking Bad. That show was all grounded in reality and crime, never touching on anything sci-fi or supernatural. Pluribus, though, is built around something alien and really strange happening. It’s cool that it’s still set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Carol lives, even though the story takes her to different places.
Since both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are set there, Pluribus strongly feels like a continuation of Vince Gilligan’s work, despite being a new story. Gilligan recently mentioned on The Rich Eisen Show that he’s considering bringing in actors from Breaking Bad—perhaps even playing their original characters—for Pluribus.
During a recent discussion, someone asked if we might see any familiar faces from Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul pop up in Pluribus, maybe even as part of the alien hive mind. Vince Gilligan, the creator, hinted that cameos are a possibility – he said they might include a few Easter eggs for fans. Interestingly, he initially didn’t want to set the new show in Albuquerque, the same location as its predecessors, but ultimately decided to.
So, the show was actually filmed there because I really like working with the same team on every project. Honestly, I was a little hesitant about setting the story in Albuquerque, because I worried audiences would get it mixed up with Breaking Bad. I definitely want this new show, Pluribus, to stand on its own, but I’m open to bringing back some familiar faces – maybe even having them play characters that subtly nod to their past work on Breaking Bad, without messing with the new storyline.
If a brief appearance by that character is meant to hint that Carol could encounter them—meaning they survived the events of Breaking Bad—the potential survivors include Kim Wexler, Saul Goodman, Skyler White, and Marie Schrader. It seems they’ve all become part of a collective consciousness in this new, peaceful setting.
The trailer for Pluribus also includes some familiar faces from Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Jonathan Banks, and Giancarlo Esposito all appear, playing characters who claim to only want to please Carol. Interestingly, their Breaking Bad characters are either deceased or no longer in Albuquerque.
Any appearances by actors or references to Breaking Bad in Pluribus will likely be subtle nods rather than major plot points that tie the shows together. Still, it would be an exciting treat for devoted fans of Vince Gilligan’s work.
