The latest episode of Pluribus included a surprise appearance by an actor from Better Call Saul, which even caught the science fiction show’s lead, Rhea Seehorn, off guard.
Carol Sturka, played by Seehorn in Pluribus, recently shared with TV Guide that she was completely surprised to see her former Better Call Saul co-star, Patrick Fabian, appear in an episode. Fabian played lawyer Howard Hamlin in the Breaking Bad spin-off. She said, “I was really surprised – I had no idea he’d be in it.”
In the fifth episode, “Got Milk,” Carol unintentionally kills Zosia while attempting to drug her. This act causes the Others, who are controlled by a hive mind, to abandon Carol. She’s left alone for the remainder of the episode, comforted only by a pre-recorded message from the Others promising continued support from a distance.
The message was from Fabian. Seehorn explained she wasn’t told about his appearance because the producers hoped to capture a funny mistake from her. However, that didn’t work out as planned. She added that she was worried about messing up, especially since it was a long, important take – the first time her character heard the line.
Seehorn confessed that while she didn’t visibly react during filming, she likely had a small, internal response that she managed to conceal. She also revealed she burst out laughing as soon as the director called ‘cut’.
You know, I have no idea which take made the final cut, but I bet if you showed it to someone who really studies faces – a psychologist or psychiatrist, maybe – they’d catch the exact moment my reaction changed. I think you’d see my face go from confused – a real ‘What?’ – to realizing it was Patrick. I immediately tried to recover and keep acting, but they yelled ‘cut.’ I just burst out laughing and ran off, shouting, ‘That’s Patrick! You got me!’ Apparently, they’d been holding onto that take for ages just to mess with me, which, honestly, was hilarious.
Seehorn supported the decision to have her former Better Call Saul colleague make a cameo appearance. She explained that his voice is truly exceptional, making him a perfect fit for the Others to deliver a poignant and emotionally complex message in that scene. According to Seehorn, he would have been the ideal choice even if it hadn’t been intended as a nod to fans.
Honestly, even apart from his role in Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian has a remarkably calming voice. I can easily picture the characters from Lost choosing it for their outgoing voicemail message, so I completely understand why he was cast.
New episodes of Pluribus are released every Friday on Apple TV.
