Even though the Disney+ show Percy Jackson is finishing up its second season, the writers are already planning storylines and characters for future seasons. Season 2 covers the events of Sea of Monsters, the second book in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles series by Rick Riordan. With the show’s popularity, it’s likely that all five books in the series will be adapted for television, and possibly even more of Rick Riordan’s work.
The show has been adding details and characters not found in the original books, including in the latest episode. In “I Go Down With the Ship,” the second-to-last episode of Season 2, Percy Jackson and his friends meet a demigod with a special ability that doesn’t appear in the books until much later. This power is one of the strongest a demigod can possess, and it also hints at the introduction of a popular character from another series by Rick Riordan.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians Just Introduced Charmspeak
In “I Go Down With the Ship,” we meet Aidan, a soldier fighting with Luke Castellan. As the son of the goddess Aphrodite, he’s surprisingly chosen to rebel against the Olympian gods and support Kronos and the Titans. While stationed at the Long Island docks, Aidan is distracted from his task by Percy Jackson and his friends. Desperate to regain his freedom, he attempts to use a hidden ability.
Aidan, pinned against a wall by Clarisse La Rue, casually suggests they continue their conversation somewhere else. Clarisse quickly realizes he’s trying to manipulate the situation and tells him to stop using his “charmspeak.” This is the first time charmspeak is mentioned, but it appears repeatedly throughout Rick Riordan’s books, even in series like Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.
As a huge fan of Aphrodite’s kids, I’m always fascinated by Charmspeak! It’s basically this incredible ability some of the strongest ones have where they can magically persuade people just by talking to them. They don’t need spells or books or anything – it’s like a form of hypnosis. They can offer a ‘suggestion,’ and the other person will pretty much do whatever they say! It works best on smaller things, but a really skilled Charmspeaker could even convince someone super strong-willed to do something totally unexpected.
Charm speaking usually only has a short-term effect, and people affected by it often later regret their actions, even though they don’t understand why they did them. While many who practice this ability are children of Aphrodite, powerful magic users like Circe can also do it.
The upcoming season of Percy Jackson will introduce the character of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who will be played by Kate McKinnon. Aphrodite’s appearance shifts depending on who is looking at her. While she has a minor part in The Titan’s Curse, the book Season 3 adapts, she becomes more important in the Heroes of Olympus series, where one of her daughters is a key character. McKinnon will portray at least one form of the shape-shifting goddess.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians Is Already Setting Up a Key Hero
The introduction of charmspeak in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series is surprisingly significant. Piper McLean, a key character in the sequel series, The Heroes of Olympus, is a particularly skilled user of this power. By mentioning charmspeak in the second season of the Percy Jackson show, the creators are hinting that Piper McLean will likely appear in future seasons, even if it’s not for a while.
In Rick Riordan’s series, the power of charmspeaking doesn’t appear until The Lost Hero, where Piper McLean first realizes she can influence people’s thoughts. Even as a child, Piper had a knack for getting what she wanted, no matter how strange the request. For example, she once talked a car salesman into giving her a car without paying.
Let me tell you, Piper had this knack for getting people to do what she wanted, but it was a temporary fix. They’d quickly come to their senses, demand their stuff back, and Piper often found herself in trouble with the police as a result. The real mystery was why she was so persuasive in the first place, and that answer didn’t come until she discovered a pretty shocking family secret: she’s the daughter of Aphrodite! That explained everything, honestly.
During her journey, Piper McLean gets better at using her power of charmspeak, but she wrestles with the ethics of it. Charmspeak removes a person’s ability to choose for themselves and can leave lasting emotional trauma. Piper encounters other powerful users of charmspeak, like the legendary Medea, and witnessing their misuse of the ability makes her dislike her own power. Despite this, she continues to use it against enemies and in emergencies when she feels she has no other choice.
As a big fan of the series, I remember being really excited when Piper McLean finally showed up! She doesn’t appear until the first Heroes of Olympus book, which is packed with new faces like Jason, Leo, Frank, and Hazel. Even before she actually appears, though, there’s this mention of ‘charm speak’ that hints she’s coming – and that she might be one of the seven heroes foretold in the next Great Prophecy. It definitely got me hooked and wanting to know more about her story!
Will Disney+ Adapt Heroes of Olympus?
As Percy Jackson & the Olympians gets ready for its third season, the big question is how much of the book series it will cover. Rick Riordan’s stories feature many different mythologies, like Greek, Roman, Norse, and Egyptian. While dedicated fans hope to see all the books adapted, most are eager to see The Heroes of Olympus brought to life on screen.
The Heroes of Olympus series is the second five-book adventure in Rick Riordan’s popular world of mythology. It introduces the Roman versions of the Greek gods, who have similar powers but slightly different personalities. The series also features Camp Jupiter, a training ground for Roman demigods. The story centers on seven heroes – both Greek and Roman – who must work together to prevent the ancient goddess Gaea from destroying Olympus and to stop a war between their two camps.
It’s currently unknown if Disney+ plans to adapt the Percy Jackson series beyond the first five books. Rick Riordan, an executive producer on the show, has expressed interest in continuing with The Heroes of Olympus, potentially as a five-season spin-off or as seasons six through ten of the existing series. However, Riordan hasn’t confirmed anything, and adapting Heroes of Olympus will likely depend on the popularity of the current Percy Jackson show.
If a TV or movie adaptation of Heroes of Olympus happens, it could pave the way for more of Rick Riordan’s books to be made into live-action shows or films. Previously, there were plans for a series based on Egyptian mythology, but that project was cancelled. Disney could potentially revive it as a spinoff. There are also three more Percy Jackson books detailing Percy’s senior year, and a spinoff series following Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, on new adventures. Plus, the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy introduces Norse mythology, offering another potential series.
The future potential for adaptations is vast, but ultimately depends on how well the main show performs. Several of the books could become live-action series, and Heroes of Olympus is a strong possibility. The newest episode of Percy Jackson is a promising sign, offering fans hope that Piper McLean and other characters will eventually be included in a major Riordanverse story.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians is available to stream on Disney+.
