Pedro Pascal Threw Production of Weapons ‘Into Turmoil,’ Says Director: ‘I Had to Recast the Entire Movie’

Movie director Zach Cregger, famous for his horror hit “Barbarian,” has disclosed that the casting for his upcoming film “Weapons” underwent a total revamp following complications related to Pedro Pascal after the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

Originally, the movie focused around a spine-tingling enigma in a tiny Pennsylvania town where 17 students inexplicably disappeared from a primary school, had plans for an illustrious cast, with Pascal taking on another prominent role within the film industry.

In an open and honest conversation, Cregger discussed the difficulties encountered during the production process, revealing how the strikes had a domino effect, culminating in Pascal’s decision to leave.

Originally, I’d planned an entirely different group of actors for the movie,” he confessed. “But then came the strike, followed by scheduling conflicts with Pedro Pascal. As a result, I was forced to change the entire cast of the film.

He made it clear that such setbacks are common in the industry, stating, “These are the inevitable challenges we face. The strikes held us back, which led to scheduling conflicts, pushing us right back to where we started. No one is to blame; it’s just a domino effect of delays. I had to start anew.

Originally scheduled to play a father frantically searching for his lost child, Pascal was eventually unable to take on the role due to a busy 2025 schedule. This packed schedule includes starring roles in A24’s romantic drama “Materialists” alongside Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, an independent Western film titled “Eddington,” and his highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Reed Richards in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

If he hadn’t left the ship, it would have been his fourth significant blockbuster of the summer 2025 season, a fact that some in the industry speculate could be due to excessive promotion or too frequent appearances on the silver screen.

In the process of recasting weapons, it wasn’t just Pedro Pascal who was involved; according to Cregger, a significant number of the original cast members needed to be swapped out.

The initial announcements hinted at a star-studded lineup with Brian Tyree Henry (known for his roles in Atlanta and Eternals), Austin Abrams (famous from Euphoria and Wolfs), and Renate Reinsve (acclaimed for her work in The Worst Person in the World).

In the end, only Abrams remained, sticking with the project through the turmoil.

“He hung tough with me,” Cregger said of Abrams. “That’s my dude right there.”

Abrams, who plays a drug-addicted town resident named James, shared his enthusiasm.

He mentioned that he had watched ‘Barbarian’ with a friend, and when Justin Long appeared in the car scene, he was immediately captivated by the movie’s creator. He managed to reach out to Zach, who was working on another project at the time. Zach thought he would be suitable for the role and offered it to him. He was so fond of the part that he held onto it eagerly, hoping to be a part of the production.

In a new development for the movie, Josh Brolin, renowned for his MCU character Thanos, has taken over Pascal’s role as the mourning father. This change has ignited debates among fans and critics about how the film’s mood and interactions could change due to Brolin’s strong, intense acting style contrasting with Pascal’s. The updated cast now suggests a unique perspective on the complex horror saga, which is said to share Paul Thomas Anderson’s tone from Magnolia, but with an undercurrent of supernatural fear.

The making of the movie titled Weapons has concluded following significant alterations, and it’s now preparing for its big screen debut on August 8, 2025, thanks to New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Cregger’s background highlights industry-wide concerns, as strikes not only delay productions but also intensify the difficulties of managing top-tier talent in an age characterized by franchise supremacy and streaming battles.

In spite of any challenges related to Pedro Pascal, there’s still a lot of excitement for the movie “Weapons,” which is bolstered by the unexpected success of “Barbarian.” Whether the recasting will enhance or change the film’s influence, it underscores the delicate equilibrium between artistic ambition and practical considerations in contemporary film production.
