Even though we still don’t have a new Friday the 13th movie for Halloween 2025, that might change soon! The people behind the Friday the 13th franchise are planning several new projects, and the first one is coming very soon: a TV show called Crystal Lake. It’s an official series about the Voorhees family, and filming for the first season is now complete. Horror fans will be able to watch it on Peacock.
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane Celebrates End Of Filming For Crystal Lake Season 1
Following the myriad behind-the-scenes complications that preceded the current iteration of Crystal Lake, Brad Caleb Kane took over as showrunner, one of my favorite TV leads (Linda Cardellini) was cast as Pamela Voorhees, and then production in earnest kicked off in April 2025. Now, a mere six months later, Kane took to Instagram to not only share pics alongside writer Laura Marks and stars Cardellini, Daniel Stewart Sherman, Joy Suprano and Cam Scoggs, but also to announce that Season 1 is more or less in the can. Here’s how he worded it:
The wrap party for Crystal Lake was amazing! I absolutely loved working with this incredibly talented and wonderful team. Season one is almost finished, and I’m already hoping we get to do more!
We’re not quite finished with Crystal Lake yet, and there’s still a lot of work ahead before it’s ready for everyone to see. Things like sound effects – getting those perfect, gruesome squelches – and adding the final touches with CGI gore are huge. Composing the music to match the visuals is also key. Honestly, post-production can really make or break a film, but knowing the incredible talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera, gives me a lot of confidence that we’re on the right track!
Mike Flanagan is likely to please Stephen King fans with his new show, IT: Welcome to Derry, which he co-created with Jason Fuchs. It makes you wonder if he’ll have to leave a possible second season of Derry if Crystal Lake gets quickly renewed. But it’s best not to worry about that now, as this is a time for celebration.
Co-Star Cam Scoggs Shared His Own Intriguing Wrap Post
Co-star Cam Scoggs shared his own excited and heartfelt Instagram post to commemorate the end of filming, and in his post, he used a word that I can only assume comes up extremely rarely in the same breath as mentioning Friday the 13th. See if you can pick out which one I mean:
It’s been an amazing ride since June! Working on Crystal Lake has always been a dream come true. Huge thanks to A24 and Peacock for giving me this opportunity. I also want to thank the incredible crew – you were the best people to work with every day. And a massive thank you to director Brad Caleb Kane, who’s approached this iconic franchise with so much respect, cleverness, and energy. You won’t be prepared for what he’s created!
If you guessed I was referring to humor, you’re right! Honestly, if someone told me the Friday the 13th movies were deliberately made to avoid being funny, I wouldn’t be shocked. Most of the attempts at humor in those films don’t land, but the serious moments often get the biggest laughs. Part VI: Jason Lives is a bit of an exception – it’s just goofy, not particularly clever.
Just to be clear, I understand Scoggs was talking about how Kane first tackled the Friday the 13th story, not the Crystal Lake setting itself. However, I find it hard to believe the showrunner’s sense of humor, appreciation for the franchise, and excitement didn’t influence the final result. I’m sure they did. If someone who worked on any of the Friday the 13th films can tell me any of those directors showed a playful side on set, I might change my mind.
Just because I don’t find Friday the 13th particularly clever doesn’t change how much I enjoy the series overall. I don’t require it to be witty—it’s just a pleasant surprise when it is.
Scoggs continued his post and managed to get my excitement up even higher, saying:
Honestly, I’m so excited for audiences to finally see this – especially the long-time fans of the series. They’re going to love spending more time with the vibrant characters and that iconic, eternally-living resident of this famously haunted town. We don’t have a release date just yet, but filming is officially done, and I’m leaving this project with a truly full heart. 🫶🏻
We don’t have a confirmed release date for the Crystal Lake game yet, but while we wait, you can watch the short film Sweet Revenge directed by Mike P. Nelson, who also directed Silent Night, Deadly Night.
