Peacemaker Season 2 May Be Set In The New DCU, But It’s Making Years Of Watching DCEU Movies Worth It

The superhero movie landscape is shifting dramatically with the launch of the new DC Universe (DCU). James Gunn, one of the DCU’s leaders, is kicking things off with a first set of films and shows called “Gods and Monsters” that will define the new storyline. Surprisingly, even with all this new world-building, the second season of *Peacemaker* feels like a satisfying continuation of what came before in the previous DC movies and shows, and it’s incredibly enjoyable.

As James Gunn builds the new DC Universe (DCU), he’s confirmed that some characters from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will return. Peacemaker, played by John Cena, is a key example. The second season of *Peacemaker* has been slowly showing us which events from the old DCEU still matter. After the third episode, which tied into both David Ayer’s *Suicide Squad* and Gunn’s *The Suicide Squad*, I’m really glad I’ve spent so much time watching the DC movies!

Peacemaker Is Establishing A New DCU, While Offering Connections To Both Suicide Squad Movies

The second season of *Peacemaker* (available on HBO Max) quickly established its place in the DC Universe with a recap segment. This segment revealed changes to the established DC Extended Universe (DCEU), including the Justice League being reimagined as the Justice Gang. It was a clear and efficient way to explain what from the first season still applied and what had been altered.

The show has kept building connections to the DC Universe, and the latest episode continued that trend. A flashback showed that Emilia Harcourt and the late Rick Flag Jr. were close friends, and Joel Kinnaman reprised his role as Flag for the scene.

The conversation revealed that June Moon, also known as Enchantress (played by Cara Delevingne), survived the events of David Ayer’s *Suicide Squad* and remains part of the DC Universe. It also established the scene shortly before James Gunn’s *The Suicide Squad*, where Rick Flag is ultimately killed by Peacemaker in Corto Maltese.

HBO Max offers streaming access to a vast library of movies, shows, documentaries, and all things DC, including the hit series *Peacemaker*. Plans begin at $9.99 per month (with ads). Explore available plans and start streaming today!

This scene not only helped explain Harcourt’s history and why she initially disliked Chris, but it was also a satisfying moment for dedicated DC fans. Even though the DC Universe is starting fresh, James Gunn is skillfully weaving in elements from past stories, acknowledging those who have followed the franchise for years and through different shared universes. After doing this successfully in just a few episodes of *Peacemaker*, it seems Gunn could potentially do the same with almost any character from the previous DC Extended Universe.

The flashback sequence was already a treat for DC fans, but the show’s multiverse storyline in Season 2 allowed Karl Urban to appear in even more scenes. We saw a different version of his character, Rick Flag Jr., who was happily dating Harcourt. This gave Urban a chance to show off his comedic side, creating a fun contrast with the more cynical Flag we’re used to.

I’m really excited about the direction James Gunn is taking the DC Universe, and I appreciate how carefully he’s building everything out. The connections and crossovers in the first few shows and movies have been great, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does next.

New episodes of *Peacemaker* are released on Thursdays on HBO Max, and are part of the 2025 television lineup. Fans are hoping to see more unexpected guest appearances in upcoming episodes.
