James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad, recently disclosed that John Cena wasn’t his initial pick to play the character Peacemaker.
Who did James Gunn write the Peacemaker role for?
In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Gunn revealed that initially, he intended for Dave Bautista, known for playing Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, to take on the role of Peacemaker in the show.
Gunn stated that he created the character of Peacemaker specifically for Bautista, but unfortunately, it was only offered in two movies and the pay wasn’t high. As a result, Bautista had to take roles where the financial compensation was better.
Gunn expressed his admiration for John Cena, stating that he found him incredibly funny in the movie “Trainwreck” and has been a fan since then. The director further shared that they instantly connected upon meeting, forming an immediate friendship, and have worked together extensively on projects like two seasons of “Peacemaker,” “Suicide Squad,” and upcoming collaborations. Gunn expressed his high regard for Cena, calling him an exceptional actor and expressing his fondness for the “Peacemaker” show more than any other work he’s ever been a part of.

Four years since The Suicide Squad’s debut, it’s become challenging to envision another actor embodying Peacemaker like John Cena did. His portrayal as the DC anti-hero has garnered acclaim from both critics and fans, making him one of the few lasting characters from the former DC Extended Universe. Now, Peacemaker holds a significant position in the revamped DC Universe. The future of this character within the DCU remains uncertain, but James Gunn’s recent comments to Stern suggest that the head of DC Studios has a clear plan for where Peacemaker’s future lies in the franchise.
A new episode of Peacemaker Season 2 drops every Thursday on HBO Max until Oct. 9.
