Paul Bettany Teases ‘VisionQuest’ Being a Differrent Type of MCU Series

As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to hear Paul Bettany drop a little hint about VisionQuest, which is coming out in 2026! It’s going to be the third installment in a story that started with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. Of course, Paul Bettany is back as Vision, but it’s awesome to hear James Spader is returning as Ultron. They’ve also added some great new faces – Emily Hampishere, who I loved in Schitt’s Creek, will be playing E.D.I.T.H. from the Spider-Man movies, and Orla Bradley from Star Trek: Picard is joining as F.R.I.D.A.Y.. It sounds like the series will really explore the legacy of Tony Stark’s AI, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!

At the Saturn Awards, Paul Bettany hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming VisionQuest series. According to Comic Book Movie, Bettany shared that showrunner Terry Matalas is planning something unconventional, similar to WandaVision and Wonder Man, with the series aiming for bold and ambitious storytelling. Bettany also revealed that VisionQuest will focus on themes of identity, as the resurrected White Vision seeks to understand his past and discover who he truly is.

I believe Terry and I both understood that Marvel often succeeds when it takes bold risks. He really got who Vision is as a character – someone for kids like I was growing up, a kid who felt different and didn’t quite fit in. He understood the purpose of these stories and the character, and I think we created a really enjoyable show about someone who feels like an outsider and is trying to discover their identity.

Marvel Studios

Development on VisionQuest began in October 2022, shortly after Jac Schaeffer, the head writer of WandaVision, signed a three-year contract with Marvel Studios. Schaeffer was initially intended to lead the series, but she later shifted her attention to Agatha All Along, and Terry Matalis was brought in to rework VisionQuest. After some MCU shows like Secret Invasion attempted a movie-like format spread across multiple episodes, VisionQuest appears to be taking a different approach. It aims to be more like WandaVision, Wonder Man, or She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, using the Disney+ platform to explore new and creative storytelling possibilities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The upcoming Marvel series VisionQuest is expected to be a significant addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show will explore different types of Stark-created AI in human form and will feature Ruadridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff, also known as Speed. Speed is the reborn son of Wanda and Vision from the WandaVision series. As shown in Agatha All Along, Tommy’s soul was transferred into the body of Thomas Shepherd by Billy Maximoff and Agatha Harkness. Beyond being a member of the Young Avengers, VisionQuest will give Vision the chance to reconnect with one of his children, potentially leading to a full family reunion with Vision, Speed, Wiccan, and Wanda Maximoff in a future film like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.

Although scheduled for 2026, a specific release date for VisionQuest hasn’t been announced. Marvel Studios is likely aiming to release it before Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 17, 2026. Considering Wonder Man debuts in January and Daredevil: Born Again runs from March through May, a late summer or early fall release seems most probable. Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is set for summer 2026, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2 is anticipated in late fall. VisionQuest could be the last live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe project before Avengers: Doomsday dramatically changes everything, offering fans a final look at the MCU as they currently know it.
