Patrick Dempsey Reveals Heartbreaking Details of Eric Dane’s Final Days

The actor, known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on the popular medical drama, passed away. Sadly, his death occurred on the 20th anniversary of his first episode on the show.

Eric Dane portrayed the charming and confident plastic surgeon nicknamed “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, a contrast to Patrick Dempsey’s character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, who was known as “McDreamy.” Dane first appeared in the show on February 19, 2006, in Season 2, Episode 18, titled “Yesterday.” Following news of his passing, many of his co-stars shared tributes, and Dempsey also spoke about Dane’s final days.

Dempsey shared on Virgin Radio UK that he was deeply saddened by the news, but he hadn’t spoken to the person for about a week.

He was losing his speech and was confined to bed. It became increasingly difficult for him to swallow, and his quality of life was declining quickly.

He was a genuinely funny and delightful person to work with. I want to remember him for the joy and laughter he brought to every set – he always made things fun. We clicked immediately and had a great working relationship.

Dempsey remembered the first time he saw his co-star, describing him emerging from the bathroom, looking incredibly fit and making everyone else feel self-conscious. He emphasized that there was never any rivalry between them, only a strong and genuine respect.

In 2025, Dane received a diagnosis of ALS, a disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Dempsey also commended his former colleague for using his final time to help others learn about the condition.
