Paramount & WB Merger Could Bring Big Changes to James Gunn’s DCU

Recent reports suggest how the DC Universe could change if Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery were to merge.

Paramount Skydance is among the companies considering a purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. While no deal is finalized, reports suggest Paramount’s David Ellison is actively pursuing a merger with Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav. If the merger happens, it could lead to changes at DC Studios, which is owned by Warner Bros. Pictures, and potentially impact the plans of DCU’s James Gunn and Peter Safran.

What could the Paramount & WB merger mean for the DCU?

So, I was reading Puck News, and apparently, if Paramount and Warner Bros. actually merge, James Gunn and Peter Safran – the guys running DC Studios – might not have as much say over what movies and shows get made. It sounds like the big suits at the combined company could start influencing creative decisions, which, as a movie buff, always makes me a little nervous!

According to the article, Paramount Pictures’ Josh Greenstein is eager to collaborate with ‘Weapons’ director Zach Cregger on a DC film if the current merger goes through.

Currently, James Gunn and Peter Safran have the final say on who directs DC films, but only after scripts have been developed to their standards. However, if the Ellisons gain control, that could change.

Paramount Pictures didn’t respond to requests for comment from Puck, and no additional information is currently available.

The new DC Universe (DCU) created by James Gunn and Peter Safran launched in December 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos, and has since added Superman and a second season of Peacemaker. The DCU will continue to expand in 2026 with the Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock, the Lanterns TV show featuring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, and a Clayface movie co-written by Mike Flanagan and starring Tom Rhys Harries as the villain. A sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled for release in July 2027.
