If you’re looking for a new Western after finishing Yellowstone, Joe Pickett on Paramount+ is a fantastic choice. There are a lot of great Western shows available right now – like Yellowstone, Longmire, and The English – offering something for everyone, no matter what kind of Western you enjoy.
Taylor Sheridan has fundamentally changed Western television, and even people who don’t enjoy Yellowstone acknowledge its impact in creating opportunities for other shows. If you’re a fan of Yellowstone and want something similar, you should definitely check out Joe Pickett.
What Is Joe Pickett About?
The series Joe Pickett first appeared on Spectrum Originals in December 2021, starring Michael Dorman as the main character, a game warden. At the start of the show, Joe, a committed public servant, relocates with his wife, Marybeth (played by Julianna Guill), and their two daughters to Saddlestring, Wyoming, where he’s responsible for overseeing Yellowstone National Park.
Joe initially believes he’s achieved success in his career, but his discovery of a poacher’s body in his yard leads him to suspect something is amiss in his quiet town. His dedication to doing the right thing quickly puts him at odds with the town’s influential figures, creating some powerful enemies.
Joe Pickett Could’ve Been The Next Justified
While shows like Yellowstone get a lot of attention, Joe Pickett had the potential to be as good as Justified before it was unfortunately canceled after only two seasons. Michael Dorman, known for his roles in For All Mankind, Territory, and Patriot, delivers a compelling performance as a game warden who takes his job beyond simply catching those who illegally hunt.
Joe isn’t a typical hero; like the character Raylan Givens from the show Justified, he’s flawed and deals with his own issues. He can’t always be relied upon to magically fix everything. This realistic approach gives the series a down-to-earth feel, and surprisingly, it also leads to some funny moments throughout the seasons.
Why Joe Pickett Was Canceled
Unfortunately, the show Joe Pickett was canceled shortly after its second season finished airing in June 2023, with the official announcement coming in October 2023. This was unexpected, especially since Paramount had taken over the series from Spectrum, which initially suggested they believed in its potential.
Paramount hasn’t said why it cancelled the show, but the author of the Joe Pickett books, C.J. Box, says they’re trying to find a new network for it and were upset by the news. There’s a chance Joe Pickett could be revived, so it’s a good time to get caught up if you haven’t already.
