Paramount+’s #1 Trending Crime Drama Is Last Year’s Most Overlooked Movie Release

The movie Roofman is now the most popular title on Paramount+ in the US, which is a surprising turn after it didn’t get much attention when it first came out. Starring Channing Tatum, this crime drama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 and had a wider release the following month. While critics generally liked the film—giving it an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes—it only earned about $34 million in theaters.

The movie Roofman tells the real-life story of Jeffrey Manchester, a veteran who started committing crimes to help his family with money problems. He became known for robbing McDonald’s restaurants by entering through the roofs, but after being caught, he famously escaped from prison and hid inside a toy store for more than six months.

Channing Tatum stars in Roofman, which also features Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield, Peter Dinklage, Juno Temple, and Ben Mendelsohn. The film became available on Paramount+ on December 9, 2025, just a couple of months after its release in theaters. Streaming services have helped more people discover Roofman than saw it in cinemas. While having a star like Channing Tatum certainly helped, it wasn’t enough to draw large crowds to theaters, which is unfortunate. This is because Roofman is a really good crime drama with a funny side, and it deserved a much bigger audience from the start.

Why Roofman Was So Overlooked When It Released In 2025

Crime dramas are consistently popular with audiences, and there’s always a lot of them available in both theaters and on TV. While quality varies, the recent box office struggles of the film Roofman were unexpected. Despite being based on a remarkable true story and boasting strong acting, the movie didn’t seem to find its audience. It’s possible that blending different genres together confused viewers and led to the film being overlooked.

While Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another immediately leaned into its serious story, even with comedic moments, Roofman was initially presented as a lighthearted romantic comedy with a strange true crime element. However, the film is actually a deeply emotional and dark story about a man struggling to support his family. Like One Battle After Another, it does have funny parts, but the overall tone and the character’s journey didn’t align with the movie’s marketing.

The marketing for Roofman focused on comedy, but the movie’s poster didn’t accurately reflect its tone. While there were some funny scenes with Tatum’s character, they didn’t represent the overall seriousness of the story, which centered on an escaped convict. Though Roofman might not be a top film of 2025 like One Battle After Another, it’s interesting to consider how audiences would have reacted if the movie had fully embraced its potential as a dramatic, yet strangely charming, true crime story.
