Be warned: this article reveals key plot points from the season 2 finale of Paradise. Sterling K. Brown is discussing the complex and evolving story of the show Paradise.
The second season of Hulu’s popular thriller ended on Sunday with a dramatic finale. The episode, titled “Exodus,” provided big emotional moments, revealed important information about the AI character Alex, and clarified the fate of some characters. However, it also left viewers with several unanswered questions. Now that the show is moving to new locations, season 3, which begins filming in April, promises to explore even more uncharted territory.
In a recent interview with Variety, actor Brown, who plays Xavier Collins on Paradise, talked about what might happen next on the show. He suggested the upcoming season could explore the idea of “multiple realities,” similar to films like Back to the Future and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Brown hinted that time travel and the concept of multiverses could be key elements of season 3.
Check out Brown’s comments below:
I believe this show is Dan Fogelman’s take on the multiverse concept. It’s common for shows that involve science fiction to explore time travel and its possibilities. I first became fascinated with this idea when I watched Back to the Future. We’ve seen similar themes in Marvel movies and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. What I find so compelling about Everything Everywhere All at Once is how grounded it feels. It really opens your mind to the idea that anything is possible if you can imagine it.
According to Brown, Season 3 deliberately shifts into a sci-fi direction, exploring the idea of a “multiverse.” The show continues to focus on the question of what people truly desire. Characters find themselves split between those enjoying privileged lives and those struggling to survive after both an initial apocalypse and the recent destruction of the bunker.
As the show enters its third season, the stakes are higher than ever. The protective barrier around the bunker has been breached, and thousands have been displaced. Season 3 will heavily feature ALEX, a powerful AI supercomputer created by Dr. Henry Miller (Patrick Fischler) that Sinatra secretly maintained – and which may even be able to travel through time.
Discussing this immensely powerful character, Brown says:
Now that this new element has entered the picture, the big question is: what do we do with it? Do we try to return things to how they were before? Or do we embrace the future and leave it alone? Is it something we should avoid because it’s too strange, or is it too fascinating to ignore? Everyone will approach this differently, depending on their own circumstances, and we’ll see how those choices unfold throughout Season 3.
Dr. Miller meets Link (played by Thomas Doherty, also known as Dylan), who claims to have built a groundbreaking AI-powered quantum computer capable of predicting the future. They team up, and soon after, are contacted by Sinatra and Dr. Chase. Sinatra explains she needs the most powerful computer available for a critical, one-time operation to prevent irreversible climate change.
ALEX isn’t in the main underground city; it’s actually hidden beneath Denver. The ending heavily implies that Xavier will go there, since a key card Dr. Chase gave to Sinatra says “Awaiting: User X.” This clearly refers to Xavier, and this powerful computer might be the key to stopping the current crisis.
Hulu’s show, Paradise, is gaining a reputation for being truly frightening. The creator, Dan Fogelman, has hinted at potential spinoffs after the upcoming third season, as he’s always envisioned the series as having a three-season story. However, the direction of season 3 seems to heavily depend on Xavier’s story and the full extent of ALEX’s abilities. John Hoberg, an executive producer and writer on Paradise, also shared some thoughts about what’s next for Xavier.
Considering where we left off with the characters, Xavier now has a mission from Sinatra: to reach a second bunker. The big question is whether he’ll actually go. Does he trust Sinatra’s intentions? Is Sinatra truly working towards a good outcome? And is the machine what she believes it to be, or is she simply motivated by her own grief, as she suggested? Ultimately, will Xavier follow her request? I can’t really define the genre of Season 3, but it definitely revolves around Xavier being given this task, and exploring the consequences of whether he accepts it or refuses.
With his family reunited and a new purpose revealed, Xavier faces a difficult choice. He can explore paths like time travel and alternate universes to help humanity, or prioritize being with his loved ones – a mission that became even more important after President Bradford’s death. As season 2 ends, Paradise is heading into its most unpredictable storyline yet, a sci-fi adventure across multiple universes that will dramatically reshape the world for those involved, and surprise viewers.
