As a huge fan of Paradise, I was so excited when the sixth episode of season two gave us a quick glimpse of Xavier and Terri making eye contact – it hinted at a big moment to come! But honestly, the real payoff happened in Episode 7, and it was everything I’d been waiting for. They finally reunited, and it was a really powerful scene.
Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for Paradise Season 2, Episode 7.
Despite the tension caused by Gary’s betrayal and how he misrepresented Terri’s circumstances, things thankfully didn’t escalate as badly as feared. The couple was happily reunited and immediately began a rescue mission in a post-apocalyptic world.
TopMob interviewed John Hoberg, a producer and writer for Paradise, who shared that the highly anticipated reunion between Xavier and Terri nearly played out in a way that was both surprising and ethically problematic.
Hoberg explained they aimed for a romantic atmosphere, despite the somewhat rough surroundings. She felt very sure about the way the character moves through the dissipating smoke.
Despite the positive feeling around the scene, the producer shared that an earlier version showed Xavier killing many people to achieve his goal. This discovery was unsettling because those people turned out to be innocent. According to the producer, it required careful adjustments to ensure the final scene felt right.
I was chatting with Enuka Okuma, who you probably know from Paradise, and she was super honest about how much pressure there was getting the reunion together. She said they really overthought things and were stressed out! But she told me that as soon as they stepped onto the set, all that just melted away. It was like she realized all her worrying was for nothing – the story was so compelling, she just had to let it take over.
You can find more of our conversation with Paradise star Enuka Okuma and executive producer John Hoberg further down. The show is currently streaming on Hulu, and with just one episode remaining in Season 2, a third season has already been confirmed.
If you’re confused about the doomsday believer in Episode 6, Hoberg shared some insightful thoughts on the character.
Paradise Producer Reveals an Alternate Version of Xavier and Terri’s Reunion

Another Take on the Moment Would Have Been More Morally Questionable.
TopMob interviewed John Hoberg, a producer on Paradise, about the challenges of orchestrating Xavier and Terri’s reunion. He shared that the actual plan for the moment was quite different from what viewers saw.
- TopMob: “How much pressure was there to get that moment perfect? And were there any alternate ways in which you guys approached that scene?”
We spent a lot of time discussing the details of the reveal – when it would happen, how it would unfold, and even the little things like the sound effects. Dan Fogelman kept fine-tuning it all throughout the editing process. It was a really big moment, and we wanted to get it just right.
The search for his wife is central to his motivation, and it’s been a key storyline since the first season. We especially felt it when they said goodbye on the phone in episode seven. We explored many different possibilities for how that search would unfold.
From the beginning, we suspected these characters would connect, and we explored that possibility in every scene. The moment he realized she wasn’t actually being held captive – that it was all a deception – and she emerged from the smoke, felt like a strong turning point. We also aimed for a romantic atmosphere, despite the surrounding violence, and we used a few subtle techniques to achieve that.
Initially, there was a storyline where Xavier accidentally killed several people, and he simply moved past it. However, discovering those people were actually innocent created a problem. It required careful adjustments to the story to make it work. Dan dedicated a lot of time in editing to ensure this part was handled correctly and sensitively.
Enuka Okuma on the Pressure of Paradise’s Big Reunion—And How It All Vanished

“I Wanted to Get the Moment Right.”
- TopMob: “The show is building up to so much, but the big thing is, you know, Xavier and Terry’s big reunion, and it finally happens at the end of Episodes 6 and 7. How much pressure was there to get that moment right?”
I really felt the pressure to deliver exactly what was expected of me, to nail the scene. Honestly, all my anxiety just disappeared as soon as we were on set. It was incredibly hot during filming, and the production was huge – with trains, tons of extras, explosions, and stunts. It was so massive that I realized all my worrying had been unnecessary. The high stakes meant I could just let go and trust the process, and surprisingly, it all came easily in the end.
I just went with the flow of what was happening, and everything worked out. Later, we filmed a reunion scene in a tent – that took place about a week after the initial event, and we did it in the studio. That gave us time to really think about how wild the first encounter had been. I trusted the director, Sterling, and tried to picture what it would be like for these characters to reunite after so many years. I hadn’t seen the actor since we filmed the second episode.
- TopMob: “When it comes to their big reunion. Were there any alternate ways that might have played out instead of what we did eventually get?”
While filming, we experimented with different approaches for each take. We explored the full emotional range of the scene – how much desperation the characters felt, and how much humor naturally emerged – trying out various ways to portray it all.
What’s great about working on this project is that we have the freedom to try out a lot of different approaches, as time allows. You really never know what will make the final cut, so we focused on capturing the overall feeling of how the reunions unfolded rather than planning for specific moments.
Paradise Star Enuka Okuma Teases Finale and Season 4 Possibilities

“How Does She Put Her Stamp on the Way the World Is Running?”
- TopMob: “Hypothetically, if there were to be a Season 3, what is something that you would really love to still explore with Terry that we haven’t really got to dive into in these first two seasons yet?”
We know Enuka Okuma is smart and dedicated, and I’m really interested in seeing how she makes a difference. I’d like to understand how she contributes to progress, whether through innovation, significant findings, or simply by leaving her mark on the world.
I’m really interested in seeing how that develops. More than anything, I hope these two can rebuild their relationship and stay together. It’s been so sad seeing the family separated, and it would be wonderful if they could finally be a complete unit again. Please let them have a lasting reconciliation.
- TopMob: “Can you tease how Terry might react to this extremely advanced bunker that she might be about to walk into, especially compared to the bunker that she just spent three years in, which is a vastly different experience.”
Anyone who’s flown in coach and then moves up to first class probably experiences some envy and curiosity. That experience is bound to influence their opinion. Even now, the area where pilots and crew rest is very nice – almost perfect – and it’s appealing even to those who don’t usually go back there. I find it quite peaceful.
- TopMob: “When you signed on to this show, did you know that Terry would be alive and well, on the outside, and potentially have an even bigger role if the show were to continue?”
I kind of suspected things weren’t what they seemed. They mentioned there would be more to my role, but I didn’t grasp how. Initially, I thought I was just playing the wife of the head of security, someone who would discuss his day at the White House. I definitely didn’t realize it was an apocalypse story – that was a big surprise! As we filmed more, I started to understand the show’s premise. I figured my character might have more to do, but with all the flashbacks, I wasn’t sure if my character and her husband would even share scenes again. So, getting this episode felt like a really great surprise.
