One of the most captivating and original post-apocalyptic shows to emerge recently is currently streaming on Hulu. Created by Dan Fogelman, the mind behind This Is Us, it brings him together again with Sterling K. Brown, who stars as the Secret Service leader in charge of presidential security. The story begins with a devastating global catastrophe, shown at the end of the first episode. In anticipation of such an event, tech billionaire Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond (Julianne Nicholson) had built a luxurious underground bunker, and a select group of people are moved there for safety.
The first season of the story was full of surprises as Xavier (Brown) learned increasingly disturbing things about his new town following the president’s death. Determined to find the killer and understand their motives, Xavier begins an investigation that reveals both troubling and encouraging clues. This leads him on a risky journey to find his way back to the person he loves.
Who Killed President Cal Bradford in Paradise Season 1
President Cal Bradford, portrayed by James Marsden, is found dead, and Xavier discovers the body. Something seems off, leading Xavier to believe foul play was involved. He’s determined to investigate, but he quickly becomes a suspect, especially considering he and the president had recently argued.
Xavier’s investigation revealed the truth: during the bunker’s construction, workers were exposed to arsenopyrite poisoning. When a project manager raised concerns, he was fired and barred from the site, and work continued. He later discovered that a close friend had died from the exposure.
Driven by a desire for revenge, he tried to shoot Cal, but Xavier intervened and was accidentally hit instead. Realizing the world was about to end, the man then murdered a couple to steal their identities. He found a woman and forced her to pretend to be Maggie (Michelle Meredith), while he took on the identity of Trent (Ian Merrigan). He’s been living under Trent’s false name ever since, working as a librarian.
He waited for the right moment, then crept into Cal’s room and killed him. As Xavier and others tried to catch him and bring him to justice, he jumped to his death from the roof. Though he died, they finally learned who killed Cal and what motivated him.
Sterling K. Brown’s Xavier Looks to Piece His Family Back Together
Although Samantha wasn’t Cal’s killer, she was involved in several questionable activities during the first season. Xavier initially suspects his friend, Agent Billy Pace (Jon Beavers), based on a warning from Dr. Gabriela Torabi (Sarah Shahi). However, before Billy can explain himself, he’s killed by Agent Jane Driscoll (Nicole Brydon Bloom), a dangerous assassin who’s managed to deceive everyone.
The most striking thing is that everything ultimately came down to Samantha’s orders. He was killed because he tried to put a stop to these terrible deeds and safeguard Xavier. He was deeply troubled by being forced to kill the scientists sent on a mission from the world above. Just before carrying out one of those executions, he discovered from a woman that the surface is actually still habitable and that people have survived.
Determined to confront Samantha, Xavier and Nicole discover a hidden stash of guns that Cal had mentioned before. Xavier enlists the help of his neighbor, Carl (played by Richard Robichaux), to display a message for everyone to see in the artificial sky: “They’re lying to you.” More messages begin appearing in the sky, including “Do you want to know the truth?” and “Who is Sinatra?”
Samantha is in a difficult position, as the only solution to the problem is to cut off all power to the town. At the same time, Jeremy helps Presley figure out how to access Cal’s tablet using his grandfather’s identification, and they uncover the truth behind everything that’s happening.
Xavier and Nicole start fighting, but Dr. Torabi guides Xavier to Samantha, where he confronts her, intending to kill her. However, he hesitates when she reveals they’ve captured Presley and plays a recording proving his wife, Teri, is still alive. Samantha offers to help him rescue Teri, but only if he abandons his current plan and helps find the person who killed Cal. Meanwhile, DNA test results arrive, unexpectedly linking the killer to someone outside the bunker – a revelation that makes sense when considering Trent’s past.
How did Teri survive? When a massive tsunami threatened to hit while they were on Air Force One, Cal faced a difficult decision. He could launch nuclear missiles for a swift end, or disable all electronics worldwide, giving people a chance to rebuild. Despite warnings from Samantha, Cal chose to disable the electronics. As a result, Teri and countless others were able to survive the disaster.
Xavier believed Cal had launched nuclear weapons and that his wife had perished. Now, learning she’s actually alive and finding notes from Cal hinting at her possible whereabouts and how to reach her, Xavier sets out on a journey to find her. Season 2 follows this quest.
How Paradise Season 1 Ends
This role was one of her most challenging – portraying a mother devastated by the loss of her son. While at a finance conference, she becomes captivated by a speaker who predicts an upcoming natural disaster will cause the end of the world. Almost no one attends his talk, and few believe him, but she finds herself listening intently.
She flagged him down to discuss what society’s response should be, and he playfully suggested retreating to a bunker. Surprisingly, given her vast resources, she took the idea seriously and became completely consumed with actually building one.
It appears this elaborate plan is connected to her late son. This secluded paradise isn’t just about saving humanity; it’s her way of preserving her son’s memory and keeping his spirit alive. However, the plan always involved destroying the outside world, and now she’s being forced to use people like Billy to keep the truth hidden – that there are still survivors outside this haven.
I was on the edge of my seat as Xavier finally located Trent, completing his deal with Samantha. All he wanted was his daughter back, and the relief was palpable… until he started questioning her about Presley. It was heartbreaking when Samantha hinted that Presley might be gone, suggesting Jane had acted on her own and… and killed her. Xavier was absolutely shattered. He couldn’t even process the thought of losing Presley, and in that moment of despair, he raised a gun to Samantha, ready to do something terrible. It was a truly devastating scene.
Jane arrived just in time, bringing Presley with her, unharmed. She shot Samantha in the chest, but not fatally, aiming above the heart. This act served a dual purpose: to maintain Jane’s image and to firmly establish that Samantha shouldn’t be underestimated. The chillingly cold and calculated nature of Jane is revealed in a whispered comment she makes while Samantha struggles to breathe.
With Samantha hospitalized and fighting for her life, Jane has become incredibly powerful, possibly the main villain of the story. Meanwhile, Jeremy is taking his father Cal’s advice to heart – if he wants to see a change in the world, he needs to be the one to make it. He’s gathering support to challenge the current system. Now that Samantha is unable to act, President Baines (played by Matt Malloy) has the opportunity to truly take control.
Xavier boarded a plane carrying supplies, heading to the location where he hoped to find Teri. Even if he succeeds in rescuing her and returning to the bunker, adjusting to life back there won’t be simple. However, we believe Xavier is capable of handling whatever comes his way.
The show will premiere on February 23, 2026, with the first three episodes available immediately. After that, a new episode will be released each week until March 30, bringing the total number of episodes to eight.
