As a critic, I’ve seen a lot of sitcoms, but The Office really stands out. Most significantly, in the season three finale, Spock linked his mind with Kirk’s for an extended period, even while they were on separate ships. This was crucial for coordinating the Enterprise and Farragut as they worked together to open a pathway created by a dangerous alien species. Vulcans usually carefully control what they reveal during a mind-meld, but Spock had no choice in this case, and ended up learning things he’d prefer not to know. This moment was a highlight for Spock and Kirk, but it clashes with something said during the very first mind-meld in the original Star Trek series.
I originally started ‘The Black Phone’ as a novel, getting about fifty to sixty pages in, but I lost confidence after facing a lot of rejections. Thankfully, Scott Derrickson and Cargill, who wrote the screenplay, used almost everything from my original short story – particularly the first two-thirds of the movie. It was a collaborative effort, and everyone involved contributed to the final result.
