Charlize Theron’s performance as the tough spy Lorraine Broughton in the 2017 film Atomic Blonde signaled a fresh direction for spy movies. The film, full of Cold War intrigue and betrayals, was known for its intense action, realistic fight scenes, and many surprising plot twists. Although only one Atomic Blonde movie was made, it felt like the beginning of a promising new series and shouldn’t be the last.
In an interview on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Quentin Tarantino surprisingly criticized Paul Dano’s performance in the 2007 film There Will Be Blood. He called Dano a “major flaw” and dismissed him as “weak,” even going so far as to label him “the weakest actor in SAG [Screen Actors Guild].” These comments are particularly notable given how Tarantino’s opinions have evolved over time.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has launched with a perfect 100% score from critics, based on the first seven reviews. This is a higher score than the first season, which currently has a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 91% after 65 reviews. While the number of reviews is still small, it’s a very encouraging start for the new season.
The change from Eric Stoltz to Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly is legendary in Hollywood. After filming for several weeks, the creators of Back to the Future (which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year) realized Stoltz didn’t quite match the movie’s intended style, so they decided to cast Fox instead.
Gal Gadot recently shared a screen test from the 2016 film Batman v Superman on Instagram, showing her audition for the role of Wonder Woman. Zack Snyder had announced Gadot’s casting at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. Gadot explained in her post that she hadn’t seen the video until recently, when Snyder finally shared it with her, and she thanked him for doing so.
The season one finale of Pluribus, titled “Got Milk,” hinted at a shocking twist similar to the plot of the classic sci-fi film Soylent Green. That movie famously reveals humanity is secretly consuming people to survive. Pluribus confirms the “Joining” group does obtain “Human-Derived Protein” from the deceased to sustain the Others, but importantly, the show doesn’t portray them as villains for doing so.
You can now watch Top Gun: Maverick on Paramount+. After doing incredibly well in theaters in 2022, it also became a huge hit on the streaming service, staying in the top 10 for over 450 days – almost a year and a half! Recently, though, it’s been bumped from the number 10 spot. Currently, Tom Cruise’s lesser-known crime thriller, American Made, is number one. Other films in the top 10 include The Equalizer and its sequel, the Naked Gun reboot with Liam Neeson, Django Unchained, Step Brothers, and A PAW Patrol Christmas – a bit of a change of pace from Top Gun, but potentially enjoyable!
