Warning! Spoilers for Outlander season 8, episode 2 ahead!
Season 8 of Outlander introduced a new prophecy, but it doesn’t quite land because the show often doesn’t follow through with these kinds of storylines. In episode 2, Captain Charles Cunningham, a newcomer to Fraser’s Ridge, revealed he has a premonition about when he will die. This creates a tricky situation for Jamie, who isn’t sure if Cunningham is trustworthy. The fact that Cunningham believes he can’t die yet makes him a potential threat, either way.
In this week’s episode of Outlander, titled “Prophecies,” Cunningham bravely faces the bear that killed Amy McCallum, acting completely alone. He explains he wasn’t afraid because he believed death held no fear for him. Later, at a gathering Jamie arranged, the full story came out: Cunningham claims his deceased son appeared to him, promising they would reunite in exactly seven years.
The beginning of this character’s storyline is definitely captivating, and it will be fun to watch how it develops throughout the rest of Outlander season 8. However, it’s hard to fully invest in this new prophecy, given the show’s habit of not following through with these kinds of plotlines.
Outlander Has A Bad Habit Of Leaving Its Prophecies Hanging
The prediction made in Outlander‘s eighth season isn’t the first instance of foreshadowing in the series. The show frequently features unexpected events and coincidences, particularly those linked to Claire’s time travel. One of the most well-known examples is the prophecy from season 3 about a baby born already 200 years old. Gellis Duncan forced the seer Margaret Campbell to predict when a Scottish king would regain the British throne, and Margaret foretold that this could only happen after the death of a child who was effectively 200 years old from the moment of their birth.
As a big fan of Outlander, I always found the storyline with Geillis Duncan and the 200-year-old baby fascinating. She figured out Brianna was her descendant, conceived in the 1700s but born much later in the 20th century. Claire, thankfully, stopped her by killing Geillis before she could go forward in time and harm Brianna. It was a pretty dramatic moment! But honestly, it feels like the show completely forgot about that whole prophecy. There hasn’t been a single mention of it since, which is a shame because it felt like a really important plot point.
A prophecy about Claire’s healing abilities, originally from the Outlander books, has been largely overlooked in the TV series. In season 4, Claire encountered Adawehi, a Native American woman who predicted Claire would develop a powerful, almost magical, gift for healing as her hair turned white. While Claire often pondered this in the books, the show hasn‘t revisited the idea that she would master such abilities, even after several seasons.
With Outlander ending soon, it’s doubtful that all the hints and predictions made throughout the series will be explained. If the show revisits prophecies from Brianna or Claire, it will need to remind viewers about the seers who made them – Campbell and Adawehi – as many will have forgotten them. This also makes it questionable whether Cunningham’s prophecy will be addressed, and if it is, it might just highlight the fact that other prophecies were never resolved, which would be disappointing.
Captain Cunningham’s Story Could Help Pay Off Other Outlander Prophecies
I’m really hoping season 8 of Outlander finally ties up some loose ends, and I think Captain Cunningham’s prophecy could be key! The writers need to bring these old prophecies back into the story in a way that feels natural, and I think Claire is the perfect person to do it. Maybe she’ll remind Brianna about the prophecy concerning her death and a future Scottish heir, or share what Adawehi said about her hair while they’re worried about Faith. Honestly, just having Claire talk about Cunningham’s prophecy might be all it takes to bring these things up again, and I’m excited to see if that happens!
Now that the idea of prophecies is being revisited, Outlander needs to start tying things together. Adawehi’s prophecy feels like the most promising storyline for season 8, potentially linking Claire’s healing skills to Faith’s survival. However, Brianna’s prophecy about a baby born 200 years in the future is much more uncertain. It’s hard to see how that could become relevant again, especially since the Jacobite storyline has been largely abandoned. If the show simply ignores that older plot, the current prophecy arc won’t feel as satisfying.
