Outlander Showrunner Teases The Explosive Series Finale

The popular time-travel romance series, Outlander, will finish after eight seasons next spring. According to showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts, deciding how to end the show was a real challenge.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Outlander executive producer Roberts confessed he struggled to write the series finale. He explained that creating a fitting conclusion for popular characters like Claire Beauchamp (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan)—whose story has captivated viewers since the show began in 2014—was challenging in itself. But he added that the biggest difficulty was trying to please the show’s devoted fans. “It really worried me,” he said.

The showrunner felt a responsibility to deliver an ending that would satisfy Outlander‘s dedicated fans, rather than simply following his own vision. He knew many shows disappoint audiences with poor finales, sometimes even damaging the entire series, and he was determined to avoid that fate, losing sleep as he worked to get it right.

Roberts shared his worries with the cast and crew of Outlander, emphasizing that season 8 should feel true to the show’s established style and meet the expectations of its long-time viewers. He believes the final season is already significant and cautioned against adding unnecessary drama or shocking twists, as many shows sometimes do when nearing their end, potentially alienating their audience.

I suggested we avoid making the next season of Outlander overly dramatic or different. The show is already beloved, and after ten years, fans know what they enjoy – let’s focus on delivering that same quality they’ve come to expect.

According to Roberts, the first few episodes of Outlander season 8 will address many of the biggest questions fans have been asking. This includes what happens to Claire’s daughter, Faith, and finally explaining how Jamie was able to travel through time. He says the season will start with a lot of reveals, setting the stage for everything that follows.

The show’s executive producer said he had the ending planned from the start. But, just in case, they filmed a few different versions to be safe.

You’ll receive a lot of information quickly at first, and we designed it to keep you engaged until the very end. While there’s plenty of drama and conflict, everything ultimately gets resolved. I always knew how the story would finish, but we filmed some alternative endings just in case.

Outlander season 8 will premiere on March 6, 2026, on Starz.
