Given the huge success of Outlander, it’s natural that Starz wants to continue telling love stories within its rich historical world. The series blends time travel with fantasy, and includes intriguing elements of witchcraft and folklore, creating a captivating and mysterious atmosphere.
The time travel in Outlander allows for incredibly compelling love stories. We’re immediately drawn in by Claire’s experience of being thrown into an unfamiliar time, and that sense of displacement is revisited when her daughter, Brianna, travels back in time with Roger. However, Outlander‘s prequel, Blood of My Blood, doesn’t quite live up to the original. It feels hesitant, perhaps due to time or a desire to avoid repeating storylines, and lacks some of the key elements that made Outlander so captivating.
Outlander Is Better at Executing the Grim Realities of Time Travel Than Blood of My Blood
As a total cinema lover, I’ve been captivated by Outlander. The story throws you right into Claire’s shoes when she unexpectedly travels from the 1940s to 18th-century Scotland. It’s immediately striking how out of place she is – people actually think she’s some kind of mystical druid! Being a woman in that era, she constantly has to find ways to stay safe. I really appreciate how the voice-over keeps reminding both us and Claire herself that she’s a complete outsider. She’s incredibly strong and independent, and honestly, she’s inspiring, but also a little intimidating to everyone she encounters.
Claire is compelled to marry again to ensure her safety, but she unexpectedly falls in love with Jamie Fraser and finds a true partner in him. Despite the limitations placed on her by society and her position as a woman, her connection with Jamie feels genuine and develops naturally. The enduring success of the Outlander series, now spanning almost eight seasons, rests on the strength of their love story and the epic scope of their lives together.
Instalove Holds the Romance Back in Outlander: Blood of My Blood
This story delves into the histories of Jamie and Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia Beauchamp, and reveals a surprising truth: both of Claire’s parents were also time travelers. Claire always believed her parents died in a car accident, but they actually disappeared through the stones, just like she did. Jamie’s parents have a different story. Brian Fraser, a bastard of the powerful Fraser family, and Ellen MacKenzie, a noblewoman from Clan MacKenzie, fell deeply in love. Despite the social barriers between them, they found a way to be together, their connection starting with a strong attraction, fueled by the excitement of a forbidden romance, and ultimately solidified by their unwavering devotion.
While Ellen and Brian clearly love each other, their relationship didn’t build as gradually and passionately as Jamie and Claire’s. Jamie and Claire’s connection grew from being thrown together, Claire’s skills as a healer, and Jamie’s honorable nature. Importantly, they had a lot of time on screen to develop their bond before getting married. Their love story unfolded slowly, and each separation made viewers desperately want them to find lasting happiness. Outlander has given Jamie and Claire moments of happiness, but continues to create new challenges even in the final season.
Claire’s parents, Julia and Henry, found love in a unique way through time travel. Before they even met, they wrote letters to each other – Henry while serving in the British military during World War I, and Julia while working in a censorship office. Julia’s letters provided comfort to Henry during the difficult war, and she found herself falling for the man she knew only through her writing. When Henry returned home, their connection deepened as Julia cared for him through the nightmares caused by his wartime experiences.
Outlander’s Generational Romance Story Gives Its Characters Proper Breathing Room
When discussing the love stories in Outlander, Brianna and Roger, and Ian and Rachel are central. Brianna is the daughter of Jamie and Claire, and Roger is the historian who traveled through time to find her. Ian, Jamie’s nephew, finds love with Rachel, a Quaker woman, in the show’s more recent seasons. Though Jamie and Claire’s romance sets the story in motion, Brianna and Roger represent the future Jamie and Claire are striving to create. Because Ian is like a son to Jamie, his relationship is equally significant.
Romance readers often want to see the main couple end up happily together, and that frequently means overcoming challenges and getting married. The most satisfying endings often show the couple starting a family and watching it flourish. Jamie and Claire’s story is particularly heartwarming – they not only found each other across time, but their child also traveled back in time to be with them, making their family complete.
The new series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, will likely present fresh challenges for Brian, Ellen, Julia, and Henry. However, the creators need to ensure a fair amount of focus is given to each character. Viewers felt the previous season’s ending favored Brian and Ellen’s storyline, overshadowing the importance of Henry and Julia, who are also central to the plot. Successfully balancing all the romantic relationships – giving each one sufficient development and realistic pacing – will be key to satisfying fans.
If you’re an Outlander fan, you should definitely check out Blood of My Blood – it’s a great prequel! While it’s promising, it still needs to reach the same level of emotional depth and romance as the original Outlander series.
