Season 5 of Outer Banks will feature the return of key villains, like the menacing Chandler Groff and the unpredictable Topper Thornton. The last season ended with a huge shock: Groff killed JJ Maybanks, played by Rudy Pankow. But that wasn’t all – it was also revealed that Groff was JJ’s biological father, meaning he killed his own son.
JJ’s death will deeply impact the final season of Outer Banks. Along with grieving, the Pogues – John B, Pope, Kiara, Sarah, and Cleo – will face a renewed threat from returning villains like Groff, who are determined to stop them and destroy their chances of success.
Every Outer Banks Villain Confirmed to Return in Season 5
Chandler Groff

In Season 4 of Outer Banks, Chandler Groff (played by J. Anthony Crane) appears as the main villain, and he has a personal connection to JJ – he’s his father. While he first seems like a grieving husband, Groff quickly proves to be a much bigger threat than anyone realizes, both to the Pogues and the viewers.
The fourth season revealed that Groff is a killer, establishing him as a major danger to the Pogues. He was responsible for the deaths of JJ’s mom, Larissa, as well as Omar, his associate Wes Genrette, and Hollis. Because of this, it’s almost certain that the Pogues will focus their efforts on taking down Groff when Outer Banks returns for its fifth season.
Crane confessed in an interview with TopMob that he believes Chandler Groff transformed into a monster, starting with his wife’s murder and solidifying that change when he killed his own son.
He realized early on he was capable of doing difficult things, like giving up his child and hurting his wife. Over time, those actions changed him for the worse, turning him into someone unrecognizable. It’s as if his inner goodness faded away, leaving only darkness, much like the portrait of Dorian Gray. He’s now become a truly unpleasant person.
Rafe Cameron

From the beginning of Outer Banks, Rafe Cameron (played by Drew Starkey) has caused trouble for the Pogues. He was once their biggest enemy, but near the end of Season 4, he seemed to change completely, making people wonder if he was going to join their side. Rafe is also Sarah Cameron’s brother.
Throughout Season 4 of Outer Banks, Rafe demonstrated surprising heroism, like stealing a boat to help the Pogues cross the Atlantic and talking his way out of trouble with the sheriff so they could find Groff. These actions seemed to stem from Sarah’s close calls with death, which caused him to re-evaluate his priorities. This change is beneficial for the Pogues, as they’ll need every bit of help they can get when they finally face off against Groff.
Topper Thornton

Topper Thornton is known for being a privileged rival to the Pogues, largely because of his wealth and feelings for Sarah. Though he wasn’t central to the search for the Blue Crown in Season 4, he’s expected to be back for Season 5 to continue his conflict with the Pogues.
Dalia

Dalia is a new villain introduced in Outer Banks Season 4 and is likely to reappear in Season 5. She leads a dangerous group of mercenaries called the Lupine Corsairs, who are determined to locate Blackbeard’s treasure, specifically the Blue Crown, just like the main characters.
Dalia and her violent followers are still hunting the Pogues, and they’ll likely continue their attacks in Season 5, particularly because the protagonists are weakened by a recent loss.
‘Finch’
Although Outer Banks hasn’t directly explained who Finch is, his role as a secretive villain and the leader of the mercenaries strongly suggests he’ll be a major obstacle to the Pogues’ plans in the final season. Many fans believe Finch is the show’s ultimate enemy.
Finch will appear in Season 5 of Outer Banks, and Jonas Pate has shared that his character will be further explored. Viewers can expect him to be a strong and impactful figure in the new season.
We’re planning to explore his character more deeply in future episodes, and we always intended for him to become a major player next season. We’re really building him up, and we anticipate he’ll be a powerful force going forward.
BONUS: Ruthie

In Season 4 of Outer Banks, Topper starts dating Ruthie, who quickly displays harmful and negative behavior towards the Pogue group.
Honestly, I’ve realized Ruthie is the real force behind Topper’s increasing aggression towards the main characters. She’s a surprisingly cunning and unsettling secondary villain, and I get the feeling she’s capable of anything – she’s totally unpredictable!
