Mandy Moore, who originally starred in the animated movie Tangled, has offered her congratulations to the actor taking on her role in the upcoming live-action version. Released in 2010, Tangled came before Disney began fully reimagining its princess stories with Frozen. The film is Disney’s take on the classic “Rapunzel” fairytale and features the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy as the spirited and daring Princess Rapunzel.
The live-action remake of Tangled has cast its stars: Teagan Croft (known from Titans) will play Rapunzel, and Milo Manheim (Zombies) will play the charming thief Flynn Rider, who is actually named Eugene Fitzherbert. The film will be directed by Michael Gracey, who previously directed The Greatest Showman. The casting announcement was made on January 7th.
After the news was shared, Zachary Levi, who originally voiced Flynn/Eugene, left a congratulatory comment on Milo’s Instagram post, encouraging him to do a great job with the role. Levi, who also stars in movies like Shazam! and Thor, had previously mentioned he felt he was too old to play Flynn again in a live-action Tangled film.
Kathryn Hahn is in discussions to play Gothel, a key character in the upcoming film. Gothel is Rapunzel’s adoptive mother, but also the one who kidnapped her. Scarlett Johansson, another Marvel star, was considered for the role, but couldn’t take it due to other commitments. In the original animated movie, Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel and Donna Murphy played Gothel.
A remake of Disney’s Tangled has been in the works for a while, but it was put on hold in April 2025 after the disappointing performance of the live-action Snow White starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. This initially suggested that Disney Princess remakes might not be successful. However, the live-action Lilo & Stitch then became a huge hit, earning over a billion dollars, and proving that remakes of Disney films from the 2000s and beyond can be very popular.
So, the buzz is that Manheim landed the role of Flynn! It was a pretty competitive field, though – I was hearing names like Charlie Gillespie, Corey Mylchreest, and even Mason Thames potentially vying for the part. And Rapunzel? They definitely did their homework there, considering Freya Skye, Sarah Catherine Hook, Olivia-Mai Barrett, and Lola Tung were all in the mix. It sounds like they really looked at a lot of talented actresses for that role.
Disney is planning a live-action version of Tangled, which could be released in theaters around 2027. The company will first release its remake of Moana on July 10th – it’s based on their most recent animated film to get the remake treatment. Announcements about who will star in the new Tangled are expected soon, and will likely build excitement for the movie.
