Only Murders In The Building’s Co-Creator Told Me All About His ‘Favorite’ Scene With Steve Martin And Selena Gomez

Hulu’s popular show, *Only Murders in the Building*, releases new episodes every Tuesday. Each week brings funny and memorable scenes with its fantastic cast. This week’s episode, the seventh of season five, was particularly special, featuring a favorite scene between Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, as chosen by one of the show’s creators.

Much of this episode revolves around a game night hosted by a group of billionaires that Oliver, Mabel, and Charles unexpectedly join. A particularly funny scene features a game of ‘Celebrity,’ where Logan Lerman, Renée Zellweger, and Christoph Waltz are naturally gifted players, while Steve Martin and Selena Gomez’s characters initially struggle to keep up.

Co-creator John Hoffman shared with me in an interview for TopMob that he was thrilled by the concept of watching these characters play a basic game.

I absolutely loved that scene, it was hilarious! Especially the beginning, with their intense back-and-forth, and Christoph’s line about ‘Celebrity.’ As someone who’s played a lot of that game, the idea of Christoph Waltz being enthusiastic about playing it as his character was just perfect. I really enjoyed watching them play, even though I’m not usually a big game person.

Hoffman went on to say that when people play games at parties, they tend to let their guard down, revealing their true selves. This definitely happened with the billionaires, but Mabel and Charles were also affected, according to the show’s creator.

People tend to let their guard down because everyone has different levels of competitiveness. It’s frustrating to see some people disregard the rules, but it’s revealing a lot about what motivates them. Ultimately, it feels like we’re all becoming more open and vulnerable.

I was completely blown away by all the quirky details we uncovered! Apparently, Vladimir Putin is a baker – who knew he makes an upside-down pineapple cake for Bash’s Labor Day party? And Kim Jong Un is obsessed with Crumbl cookies, constantly talking about them. One of my favorite things was learning that Camila and Xi Jinping have this adorable nickname for each other – they call each other ‘Bunny Face,’ and it’s just a little thing between them. Hoffman really loved seeing those powerful figures show their silly sides, and honestly, so did I. It was like seeing a whole new side to them.

As I mentioned before, watching Martin and Gomez play the game was a highlight for him. I completely agree – their panic during the Broadway round, and then using Oliver’s crazy stories to figure out the answers, was incredibly funny, according to Hoffman.

It was so much fun watching Steve and Selena in one of my favorite scenes – they were playing a game and hilariously struggling to answer questions that Oliver would have aced instantly. I really enjoyed seeing them all relax and have a good time.

That scene was incredibly playful and energetic! Steve Martin jumped for joy and Selena Gomez tossed the cards in the air at the end. It was also really funny watching them remember the outlandish stories and boasts of Martin Short’s character, like his claim to have created the names Adele Dazeem and Idina Menzel.

This scene was a definite standout, ranking among the best moments of Season 5. That includes Paul Rudd’s recurring joke, the sweet interactions between Oliver and Loretta, and the budding connection between Mabel and Jay. It was a joy to watch Martin and Gomez really let loose and get enthusiastic, especially while reminiscing about Oliver’s crazy adventures.
