Only ‘Interstellar’ Stands Between ‘Project Hail Mary’ and Box Office Immortality

As a huge movie fan, I’m completely obsessed with Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Project Hail Mary! It’s already being hailed as one of the best films of 2026, and honestly, it deserves all the hype. Starring Ryan Gosling, it’s based on the fantastic Andy Weir novel and tells the story of a scientist who has to journey to another star to try and save Earth from a failing sun. The movie had an amazing opening weekend – over $80 million domestically! – and it’s still doing incredibly well at the box office nearly a month later, thanks to fantastic reviews and everyone talking about how good it is. Seriously, go see this movie!

The movie Project Hail Mary continues to perform exceptionally well in theaters. Unlike most films, its ticket sales haven’t dropped much from week to week. In its fourth week, it earned another $24.5 million in the US and has now made over $500 million worldwide. Despite competition from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Project Hail Mary is still the top pick for adult moviegoers. It’s expected to stay that way for at least another week, until the release of Michael, a new biopic, on April 24th.

It’s rare for a sci-fi film to stay popular for very long, but Project Hail Mary is proving to be an exception. It’s already performing better at the box office than other well-regarded, realistic space movies like The Martian, Armageddon, and Gravity. There’s still one space travel movie it needs to surpass to reach a truly remarkable milestone – and if it does, it will set a record that could last for a long time.

‘Interstellar’s Record for Highest-Grossing True Space Travel Movie Is Now in ‘Project Hail Mary’s Sights

Although Project Hail Mary has done very well in theaters, it’s still earning less than Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which came out in November 2014. Like Project Hail Mary, Interstellar stayed in theaters for a long time, and benefited from the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays early on. Even as fewer theaters showed it, Interstellar played through mid-March 2015, ultimately earning over $681 million during its original release.

Since its release in 2014, no space movie has come close to matching the box office success of Interstellar. However, Project Hail Mary is now potentially on track to do just that, having already earned over $500 million in just four weeks. It has already surpassed Interstellar‘s domestic earnings, bringing in over $256 million. Although Project Hail Mary likely won’t stay in theaters as long as Interstellar did, the start of the summer movie season could help it reach a similar total.

‘Project Hail Mary’s Final Box Office Total Likely Won’t Be Settled For Years

Actually, Interstellar has earned over $774 million worldwide. It’s become a fan favorite since its release, leading to several re-releases, most notably a 10-year anniversary showing in 2024. Over the past 12 years, it’s added another $93 million to its earnings, thanks to its award-winning visuals that people continue to enjoy on the big screen.

Like many popular films, Project Hail Mary could be re-released in theaters multiple times. Audiences are loving the movie, and its stunning visuals – which are mostly created using practical effects – make it perfect for the big screen. Because of this, it will probably be a long time before we know the movie’s final box office earnings. However, the film has already done so well that it might even surpass Interstellar’s box office record for science fiction movies about space travel.
