One Of Tom Holland’s Upcoming Movies Got Hit With A Big Setback, And It’s Bad News For Anyone Who Likes Seeing His Dance Moves

2026 looks like a busy year for Tom Holland, with both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey already scheduled for release. While his future projects are uncertain, a potential opportunity has just become much less likely – and that’s particularly disappointing for fans who enjoy seeing him dance in his roles.

I remember back when the hype for Spider-Man: No Way Home was at its peak, Tom Holland casually dropped a bombshell: he was set to play Fred Astaire in a biopic. That was in 2021, and honestly, we haven’t heard much about it since. But here’s a twist: it looks like the movie might never happen. TMZ got their hands on a letter from Fred Astaire’s widow, Robyn Smith Astaire, to Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal. In it, she makes it very clear that the estate hasn’t, and won’t, authorize anyone to portray Fred Astaire on screen – in this movie or any other. So, despite Holland’s enthusiasm, it seems a Fred Astaire biopic is officially off the table, at least as far as his widow is concerned.

More on Tom Holland

Jon Watts, who directed the Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared his feelings about watching Holland take on the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ story. He anticipates a unique experience, stepping back as a viewer after being so involved in creating those films.

Tom Holland Opens Up About Why The Odyssey Has Been ‘The Job Of A Lifetime’

Robyn Astaire, the wife of the late Fred Astaire, has stated that her husband specifically requested in his will that his life not be made into a movie, and she is determined to honor that wish. She plans to pursue legal action if Sony Pictures proceeds with a planned biopic starring Tom Holland, despite the studio’s prior approval. Sources have since revealed to TMZ that the film is based on a book Sony already owns the rights to.

If the reports are accurate, Robyn Smith Astaire is strongly opposing the planned Fred Astaire biopic. Sony hasn’t released any official news about the film, but it seems unlikely they’ve cancelled it completely, as someone would have mentioned it. It’s also interesting that she’s voicing her concerns now, four years after Tom Holland was cast. Maybe she recently learned the project was moving forward and decided to speak up.

Given Robyn Smith Astaire’s strong opposition, it’s unclear if Sony will continue with the planned Fred Astaire biopic. She might have legal options to halt the film’s production, even considering the existing book rights. It’s currently unknown when these questions will be resolved, but we will continue to follow the story for updates.

Tom Holland will be back in theaters first with The Odyssey, which comes out on July 17, 2026. Then, just two weeks later, on July 31st, he’ll star in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If you missed his last role, the thriller miniseries The Crowded Room, you can watch it now with an Apple TV+ subscription.
