Recently, the comic book genre has been growing significantly, primarily due to DC co-CEO James Gunn breathing life into the DC Universe on both the big screen and streaming platforms through a HBO Max subscription. The initial film from Gods and Monsters was none other than “Superman”, and it’s worth noting that one of the movie’s most humorous moments was spontaneously created. Here’s a closer look at everything.
The cast of “Superman” is impressive, as Gunn constructs a vast universe with a large ensemble that includes other superheroes. Interestingly, while the director wrote the movie’s screenplay, there were opportunities for spontaneous scenes on set. Comedian Beck Bennett, known from Saturday Night Live, shared an amusing improvised line during a recent interview on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast. In his own words:
Near the conclusion, there’s a moment when we find ourselves inside Mr. Terrific’s T-Craft. James Gunn, in essence, yelled for a while from the back of that craft, and one of his exclamations in the film was spontaneous. It’s fantastic because in such a movie, it feels natural to wonder aloud, ‘Why don’t I have a seat?’
Absolutely, this moment was undeniably one of the biggest laugh-out-loud scenes in the entire “Superman” film. As James Gunn skillfully wrote a script to launch the DC Universe, he also ensured a fun and lively environment on set. Given that Bennett is a talented comedian, some of his improvisations made it into the movie’s final version.
In the heart of the ‘Superman’ storyline, when the Daily Planet team found themselves faced with imminent death aboard Mister Terrific’s spacecraft, it was Steve Lombard, played by Bennett, who unfortunately didn’t have a seat assigned. And in that instant, a witty improvisation sprang to life.

It was amusing to watch how Daily Planet staff members handled the superhero turmoil they found themselves in. In the DC Universe, metahumans are a regular occurrence, marking a significant shift from its earlier version. This new dynamic even allowed for some delightful comedic moments, such as those on the T-Craft. I’m eager to see more adventures for these characters in future DC films.

Even though it’s still relatively new, the DC Universe appears to be a well-developed idea. And after Superman hit the big screen, the shared universe has grown with the debut of Peacemaker Season 2 on HBO Max. We’ll have to wait and see which characters from Gunn’s blockbuster might show up in the series.
Currently, Superman is still playing on screens, making it part of the 2025 film releases. It’d be great if Beck Bennett returns before long, perhaps even in the upcoming Supergirl movie. Here’s to hoping!
