2026 looks promising for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the highly anticipated releases of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. These films are expected to be box office successes, which would be a positive shift after a string of movies that haven’t performed as well, with Deadpool & Wolverine being a notable exception.
Despite being Marvel’s biggest box office disappointment, The Marvels hasn’t left its director, Nia DaCosta, with any regrets. The film underperformed both with audiences and critics, a stark contrast to the success of Captain Marvel. However, DaCosta told Deadline that she’s proud of the hard work everyone put into the movie and values the experience.
There was a lot of talk surrounding the Marvel movies, which is understandable. But looking back, I realize everyone genuinely gave it their all, striving to create something amazing. I really value the relationships I built during that time.
Although some people enjoyed The Marvels, it wasn’t a big hit with audiences and performed poorly at the box office – it had one of the lowest grosses of any Marvel film. Since its release, neither Captain Marvel nor any of the other characters from that movie have appeared in anything new. The post-credits scene in The Marvels hinted at a connection to the X-Men and the upcoming Doomsday film, but it’s currently unconfirmed whether any of those actors will be involved.
Given the negative reaction to the film, it’s understandable if Nia DaCosta felt discouraged about working with Marvel, or if Marvel considered other directors. However, she mentions visiting the set of Avengers: Doomsday and maintains close relationships with many people still working at Marvel. She explained:
I had a great time visiting the set of The Avengers last summer. It was good to reconnect with the producers, the Russo brothers, and some friends who were in the film. Despite the movie’s box office performance and the reviews, it was comforting to know everyone involved had strong relationships. Looking back, I know everyone gave it their all and acted with good intentions, and that’s all anyone can ask.
It always helps a director to have good connections with famous actors and other industry professionals. Although Nia DaCosta and Marvel Studios are currently on friendly terms, it doesn’t seem likely she’ll direct another Marvel Cinematic Universe film in the near future. However, you never know what might happen.
She directed The Marvels and also contributed directing work to the Worlds of Marvel experiences on Disney Cruise Line, meaning she’s likely to take on exciting projects in the future. Her latest film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (you can read our review here), is scheduled for release in theaters on January 16, 2026.
