One Big Pro To Bringing Brandon Sklenar Back Into The Yellowstone Universe, According To Sklenar Himself

The popular Dutton family story will continue with new shows coming to TV in 2026. Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, will lead his own series, potentially without his wife, Monica, called Y: Marshals on CBS. Another spinoff featuring Rip and Beth is also planned. However, little news has surfaced since November 2024 about a previously announced prequel, 1944.

Without clear information, it’s possible anything could happen with the character. Many fans, including myself, are hoping Spencer Dutton, a descendant of the late Brendan Sklenar’s character, will be a central figure in the story when it jumps to 1944. The actor recently appeared on NBC’s TODAY to discuss his new film, The Housemaid, and playfully responded to a question about whether he’d be returning to the show.

You know, I’d actually really enjoy seeing myself play a character a bit older. Like, give me some wrinkles around my eyes, maybe even some grey streaks – a silver fox look, if you will! I’m definitely up for aging up a little for a role.

It’s funny, everyone in Hollywood is so focused on making actors look younger with digital effects right now, and there’s a lot of debate about it. But thinking about how Kevin Sklenar aged his character upwards using old-fashioned hair and makeup feels almost charmingly simple! Honestly, it sounds like a brilliant approach. I recently heard the cast talk about maybe even jumping forward in time for 1944, which is a really exciting possibility.

Brandon Sklenar is rapidly becoming a prominent actor. Following his success in 1923, he’s landed roles alongside Blake Lively in the 2024 film It Ends with Us, and he’s slated to appear in three 2025 movies: the tech thriller Drop, the football drama Green and Gold, and Paul Feig’s adaptation of The Housemaid.

I’m really excited about what Jeff Sklenar is doing next! He’s continuing his work connected to the world of Yellowstone with a new action-thriller called F.A.S.T., written by Taylor Sheridan and starring Jason Clarke and Sam Claflin. He’s keeping the plot under wraps for now, but he promised it’s going to be packed with incredible stunts – and that’s exactly what I want to see!

I worked on a movie for Warner Bros. written and produced by Taylor, originally called F.A.S.T. I can’t share many details, but I did a lot of the stunts. Thankfully, I have a fantastic stunt double, Jake Dashnaw, who’s been working with me for years – he handled the really dangerous stuff. I enjoy doing my own stunts whenever possible, and for this film, I even got to fly in a Black Hawk helicopter.

I’m completely convinced, and it seems like this is the only big project he has coming up. That would likely mean he’s available to reprise his role as Spencer Dutton, wouldn’t it?

I’m hearing that the reason the F.A.S.T. script ended up at Warner Bros. instead of Paramount has to do with Taylor Sheridan moving his future projects to NBCUniversal. Apparently, Paramount still owns anything Sheridan developed while he was with them, and that likely includes 1944. I’m wondering if that’s why we haven’t gotten any updates on 1944 – maybe he doesn’t want to continue that story with Paramount anymore?

Honestly, only Taylor Sheridan knows what’s next, and he’s keeping pretty tight-lipped right now. I’m really hoping that once The Housemaid is released and Alex Sklenar is doing interviews about its success, he’ll finally give us a clearer answer about what the future holds for his character in the Yellowstone universe. I’m eager to find out!
