One Battle After Another Wins Best Feature At Gotham Awards, Boosting Oscars Chances

As a huge film fan, I’m thrilled to see One Battle After Another gaining so much momentum! After taking home a major award, it’s now a serious contender for Best Picture at the Oscars. Everyone’s saying it’s one of the best films of 2025, and honestly, I can see why – it really feels like a frontrunner for the biggest prize of the night.

I was thrilled to hear that One Battle After Another took home the Best Feature award at the Gotham Awards! It was up against some really interesting films too – Bugonia, East of Wall, Familiar Touch, Hamnet, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Lurker, Sorry, Baby, The Testament of Ann Lee, and Train Dreams were all in the running. A fantastic lineup, but I’m really happy One Battle After Another got the recognition!

Winning Best Feature at the Gotham Awards is a significant accomplishment, and historically, it often points to a strong chance of winning Best Picture at the Oscars. In fact, six of the last sixteen films to win the Oscar for Best Picture first won Best Feature at the Gothams.

Films like The Hurt Locker (2009), Birdman (2014), Spotlight (2015), Moonlight (2016), Nomadland (2020), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) have all won major awards. One Battle After Another has the potential to be the seventh film to achieve this, continuing a growing pattern.

Predicting the rest of the Best Picture nominees is always tricky, but I’m feeling pretty confident about a couple of titles. Hamnet and One Battle After Another seem like locks after their success at the Gothams. Beyond those, I’m keeping an eye on Sinners, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, Wicked: For Good, and Avatar: Fire and Ash – these are films that weren’t in the Gotham mix, but definitely have a shot at an Oscar nod.

A Best Picture win would be a major milestone for Anderson, as he hasn’t yet received this award. His previous films – There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza – were all nominated for Best Picture, but didn’t win. He’s also been nominated for Best Director for those films, but never won, meaning One Battle After Another could finally earn him that first historic victory.

Critics have praised One Battle After Another, especially Wes Anderson’s direction, and highlighted the outstanding performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Teyana Taylor. All five actors are being discussed as potential Oscar nominees, despite a very competitive field this year.

Most experts believe Hamnet will win Best Picture, but it’s not a sure thing. This is especially true after Chloé Zhao’s movie lost to One Battle After Another at the Gotham Awards.
