With the release of *Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive* just weeks away, the developers at Netmarble have discussed the difficulties and effort involved in creating the next installment in the popular series.
With the PC release of *Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive* just weeks away, the game’s developers at Netmarble recently shared a new interview detailing the difficulties they faced during development. They also discussed the game’s planned specifications, promising a high-quality experience that will impress players. The team emphasized a focus on immersive gameplay and detailed combat, and hinted at extensive character customization options, allowing players to create their own personalized version of the main character.
Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive Presented ‘Exciting’ But ‘Serious Challenge‘ for Creators
Kim Kwanghun, the lead producer, explained that creating a *Solo Leveling* spin-off game for PC and consoles was a thrilling but difficult task. Their approach was to make the combat even more exciting and realistic with dynamic action. The team prioritized two things: incredibly satisfying fights and a truly immersive experience. Lead game designer Kim Hyundong added that *Arise Overdrive*’s combat system is complex and strategic. They wanted to avoid a simple button-mashing game and instead create something that felt thoughtful and engaging for players.
Kim explains that *Arise Overdrive* aims to give players a strong sense of direct control and the freedom to build their own fighting style. Combat revolves around four main skills – assassin, duelist, elementalist, and ruler – which can be combined with weapons that have special abilities. Players improve their characters using a new progression system inspired by Jinwoo’s growth, giving them a deeper level of control and turning every situation into a chance to excel.
Kim also revealed two new features designed to make the action even more intense. The Overdrive system allows characters to unlock incredibly powerful abilities under specific circumstances. Meanwhile, the Synchro Chain system lets hunters combine their strengths to target enemy weaknesses. According to Kim, this teamwork means that even less powerful hunters can become a formidable force.
Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive Includes Single-Player and Co-Op Mode Gameplay
Moon Junhwan, the lead reward balance designer for *Arise Overdrive*, explained that the game’s creators wanted players to share a common experience. This led to the inclusion of a Co-op mode, allowing players to team up and discover new skill combinations and strategies unavailable when playing alone. According to Moon, *Overdrive* strives to offer two types of enjoyment: the satisfaction of playing as the hero Sung Jinwoo and saving the world, and the excitement of joining forces with other hunters to defeat a formidable enemy.
The immersive experience of the game isn’t just about how it plays; it’s also about the sound. Kim Seoyeon from the *Arise Overdrive* sound team explained that they created dozens of unique sounds for each monster, based on its specific design. They also tailored the music and environmental sounds to each area, aiming to make the sound itself feel like an integral part of the dungeons.
Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive Developers on Players Creating a Unique Sung Jinwoo
Kwon Hwan, art director for Overdrive, discussed the game’s visuals, explaining the team aimed to stay true to the world of *Solo Leveling* while making it feel real for players and allowing for personalized experiences. He said they recreated memorable scenes from the source material, adding extra detail to make players feel like they’re actually *in* the story.
Kwon announced exciting news about character customization, explaining that the development team closely listened to player feedback. Many fans expressed a desire to personalize Sung Jinwoo, and the team agreed. They’ve carefully created customization options that allow players to change his appearance – including hairstyles, colors, and accessories – while still keeping him recognizable. In *Arise Overdrive*, players will be able to fully customize how Sung Jinwoo looks.
The new game will be released on PC on November 15, 2025, and on consoles in 2026. While Netmarble previously created the RPG *Solo Leveling: Arise* in 2024, this new game, *Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive*, is a separate project developed by a different team. You can pre-order *Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive* on Steam now for $39.99.
