Be warned: This article reveals significant plot details from Off Campus season 1, episodes 6 through 8, and the novel The Score. Proceed with caution if you haven’t seen or read them yet!
The first season of “Off Campus” surprised viewers by starting a romance between Allie Hayes and Dean Di Laurentis much earlier than the books. In the original series by Elle Kennedy, Allie (Mika Abdalla) and Dean’s (Stephen Kalyn) story doesn’t begin until the third book, “The Score.” Readers first follow Hannah (Ella Bright) and Garrett (Belmont Cameli) in “The Deal,” then John Logan (Antonio Cipriano)’s relationship in “The Mistake.” The season also ended with another twist: a new romantic rival for Dean, Hunter Davenport (Charlie Evans), both on the ice rink and in his personal life.
As a huge fan of the Off Campus series, I was really surprised by the introduction of Hunter! It definitely throws a wrench into what felt like a pretty established relationship between Allie and Dean, and sets up a classic love triangle. Their story so far has felt like a fun, fast-burning romance, so this new development is unexpected. Knowing the books, Hunter doesn’t really become central to the overall story until Kennedy’s Briar U series – he even finds his own love interest in the third book, The Play! But the show is taking a really interesting approach by bringing Hunter into Allie and Dean’s dynamic now, which is clearly designed to ramp up the romantic tension and create some serious drama. It’s a bold move, and I’m excited to see how it plays out.
Everything We Know About What Davenport Actually Did
Dean clearly has a strong dislike for Hunter Davenport. In the eighth episode of the first season, after Garrett is suspended and Birdie suffers a concussion, Logan and Tucker suggest bringing Hunter onto the team, but Dean quickly rejects the idea, using harsh language to describe him as selfish and having a bad attitude. While the first season of Off Campus doesn’t fully explain the reason for Dean’s animosity, it hints that it’s connected to his younger sister, Summer.
According to Kennedy’s take on the story, Dean is initially very excited about Hunter joining the Briar University hockey team, even making a suggestive joke to try and persuade him. Dean later becomes Hunter’s coach, helping him improve both his hockey skills and his luck with women. The only consistent element across versions of the story is that Summer and Hunter went to the same school, which might be significant when exploring the backstory of Dean and Hunter in the show.
Summer is portrayed as a carefree character in the books, and her wild side has caused her trouble with school in the past, including transfers and being put on academic probation. The second season of Off Campus might explore a connection between Hunter and Summer’s previous expulsion from school. In Summer’s book, The Chase, she and Hunter have a complicated romantic history—they almost get together several times, including a New Year’s Eve kiss and a poorly timed date—before Summer ends up with one of Hunter’s teammates. The show could potentially incorporate this history, perhaps framing their past relationship and breakup as the reason Dean is so protective of her.
Hunter’s Involvement Creates An Unexpected Off Campus Love Triangle
Any past actions by Hunter will likely make Dean even more upset in his relationship with Allie. Importantly, Hunter isn’t a part of Allie and Dean’s romantic connection. In The Score, Allie and Dean don’t pursue anyone else after their initial night together; they gradually fall into a relationship as they realize they only want to be with each other. In the series, Allie tries to convince herself she can be happy on her own by sleeping with Hunter, but this plan fails dramatically when Dean discovers it, especially after he’s confessed his feelings for her.
In season one of Off Campus, specifically episode six, “The Breakaway,” Allie and Dean’s storyline jumps forward significantly, covering almost 60% of what happens in The Score. There are still important plot points to address – like Dean’s hockey career, Allie’s audition in LA, her father’s illness, and Dean dealing with loss. However, the introduction of Hunter adds a new challenge for the couple, giving them more time to explore their feelings for each other. A well-executed love triangle can help a couple realize they’re meant to be, and Dean and Hunter’s shared history will definitely be important in season two of Off Campus.
What This Means For Hunter Davenport’s Off Campus Future
When Hunter appears in season one of Off Campus, it’s a sign he’ll be a major character going forward, not just connected to Allie and Dean’s relationship. He quickly becomes part of Dean, Garrett, Logan, and Tucker’s friend group. It’s likely Hunter and Dean will resolve their conflict – Dean was already open to exploring other relationships – which will allow Hunter to develop his own storyline at Briar University and potentially find his own romantic interest.
Currently, Off Campus has been renewed for a second season. However, if both seasons perform well, Prime Video and the show’s creator, Louisa Levy, could potentially expand the story beyond the original four Off Campus books. Following the pattern established in season 1, season 2 could introduce Logan’s romance with Grace Ivers (played by India Fowler), season 3 could begin to develop Tucker’s storyline with Sabrina James from The Goals, and season 4 could introduce Hunter’s relationship with Demi Davis from The Play, possibly in a fifth season.
The first season of Off Campus takes several liberties with Elle Kennedy’s The Deal and the rest of the book series. But the biggest change to the show’s overall story is likely the way Hunter Davenport is introduced as a rival.
All episodes of Off Campus season 1 are streaming now, only on Prime Video.
