Odessa A’zion Immediately Exits A24’s New Movie After Whitewashing Backlash

A rising star expected to become hugely popular in 2025 has left an upcoming film after people reacted negatively to the news that she had been cast.

A’zion gained significant attention this year for her role in Marty Supreme, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 2026 Oscars. Soon after, she was cast in A24’s film adaptation of Holly Brickley’s novel, Deep Cuts. However, the casting sparked controversy, with many accusing the filmmakers of whitewashing her character, Zoe Gutierrez, who was originally written as half-Mexican and half-Jewish.

As of January 29th, A’zion has left the film Deep Cuts. She announced her decision on her Instagram story, stating she agreed with the criticism the film was receiving and would no longer be involved. A’zion explained she was initially enthusiastic about the project because she liked the story, but hadn’t fully thought through whether or not she should take on the role.

Honestly, I’ve been swamped with work, and I really should have made time to reread the script earlier – I totally missed the character’s name! That’s all the script actually said about her. Anyway, I wanted to thank everyone involved, and I’ll admit, I haven’t gotten around to reading the book yet. It’s funny, I originally auditioned for a different role entirely.

A’zion concluded by stating he wouldn’t want to take a role away from the originally intended actor, and expressed excitement to see who ultimately gets the part. The film Deep Cuts will be directed by Sean Durkin, and stars Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny, who were previously set to be replaced by Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan.
