‘Obsession’ Trailer Teases New Horror Thriller

A new trailer has been released for Obsession, an upcoming horror film that promises to be a truly terrifying experience. The movie is written and directed by Curry Barker, who is well-known as a comedic creator on YouTube – his series Milk & Serial gained millions of views. Following in the footsteps of other comedians like Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger, Barker is now making his mark in the horror genre with this, his first directed feature film. Focus Features clearly saw potential in Obsession, acquiring distribution rights for $15 million, and it will be released in theaters on May 15th.

The film Obsession features Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. A newly released trailer offers a closer look at the movie’s unsettling story: a man desperately tries to win over his crush, making a dangerous wish on a magical willow tree. As often happens in these kinds of tales, his dream comes with a dark side, and the woman he loves becomes a frightening force in his life. Focus Features also released a brief summary of Obsession alongside the trailer on YouTube.

A man desperate to win over the woman he loves breaks a magical willow tree said to grant wishes. He gets what he wants, but quickly learns that even true love can come with a terrible cost.

Focus Features is teaming up with Blumhouse, the well-known horror production company, for the film Obsession, with Jason Blum as an executive producer. Though it’s still a few months from general release, Obsession has already premiered at film festivals, where critics have praised director Michael Pearce’s first feature film.

Critics Already Have an ‘Obsession’

The film Obsession premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 and immediately impressed critics. It’s being lauded for its unique blend of dark humor and horror, offering a fresh and shocking take on familiar genre elements. Currently, Obsession boasts a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as “dauntingly disturbing.” A review by Perri Nemiroff highlights this unsettling quality.

Obsession is a truly impressive film. It boasts a unique and compelling story, genuinely funny moments, real suspense, and some incredibly well-crafted scenes. Plus, it includes a performance that’s sure to be considered one of the best of the year.

Horror fans have a lot to look forward to, even before Obsession arrives next year. 2024 is already shaping up to be a great year for unique horror films, including a remake of Faces of Death and the well-received Exit 8, which explores the unsettling feeling of liminal spaces. A recent trailer for undertone—a film that impressed critics so much it landed the director the job of rebooting Paranormal Activity—debuted to positive reactions and is set for release in April. With Obsession potentially being a standout debut for its director, horror fans have plenty of exciting features to anticipate.
