Obsession Gets Unfortunate Streaming Update Amid Grossing Almost 200x Times Its Budget

The horror movie, made with a small budget, is doing incredibly well in theaters. That’s great news for everyone who worked on it, but it means fans will likely have to wait a bit longer to watch it at home.

Originally, the movie Obsession was scheduled for digital release on June 2nd, just under three weeks after its May 15th theatrical debut. However, it’s now been announced that the digital release has been removed from NBCUniversal’s schedule, likely because the film is doing so well in theaters. While a new date for renting or buying the movie online hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to stay in theaters for at least 45 days – a strategy usually reserved for very big movies.

Obsession’s Box Office Success Is Unprecedented

The movie Obsession, made with a budget of $750,000, opened to $16 million in domestic box offices. It then earned over $22 million during its second weekend, a 30% increase in attendance. The film continued to perform well in its third weekend, bringing in $26.4 million – another 10% jump. This made it the biggest third-weekend gross since Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial premiered in 1982.

The horror film Obsession has now grossed $106 million in the United States and Canada, and $148 million worldwide. This makes it an incredibly profitable movie – nearly 200 times its production budget! Its success is likely fueled by strong positive reviews and word-of-mouth, as it currently holds a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a near-perfect audience score of 95%.

Be Careful What You Wish For

This new movie explores the classic idea that you should be careful what you wish for, but with a much darker and more violent twist. Michael Johnston, known from Teen Wolf, plays a young man who purchases a mysterious toy that claims to make his deepest desire come true. He wishes for the woman he’s long admired (played by Inde Navarrette from Superman & Lois) to fall in love with him, but things quickly turn terrifying and unexpected.

With the positive reception, there’s a good chance we’ll see more stories set in this world. Clive Barker has suggested a sequel or a collection of related stories could be made, each focusing on different characters whose wishes backfire in gruesome and unexpected ways. He’s also confirmed his next film, Anything but Ghosts, will be connected to this universe in some way, although it will primarily feature a new story.

Obsession is playing in movie theaters.
