Moviegoers are obsessed with Obsession.
The new horror movie, from Blumhouse Productions and distributed by Focus Features, opened in theaters on May 15th and earned $17.2 million in its first weekend. It then surprised everyone by making $21.5 million in its second weekend – a 26% increase. This is unusual for a widely released film, and especially rare for horror movies, which typically see a drop in viewers after the first week.
After just two weekends in theaters, the film Obsession has earned $79 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. This is a remarkable return, exceeding its tiny budget of $750,000 (though some estimates place the budget around $1 million) by over 100 times. So far, the film has made about $58 million in the US and $21 million internationally.
As a huge movie fan, I recently checked out Obsession, and it’s a wild ride! It’s the brainchild of Curry Barker – he wrote, directed, and even edited it himself. The story centers around a guy completely head-over-heels for someone from his past, and he gets his hands on this strange object that supposedly makes his dream come true. But, trust me, things don’t go as planned – the way his wish is granted is seriously creepy and leads to some really unsettling stuff. Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette are fantastic in the leads, and you’ll also recognize faces like Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, Haley Fitzgerald, and Darin Toonder in supporting roles.
Beyond its huge success at the box office, Obsession has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews. Critics praise the film for skillfully turning a disturbing concept into a surprisingly entertaining experience – it’s both genuinely unsettling and sharply funny, all while remaining consistently thrilling. It currently holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film has earned a 95% audience score, with many viewers praising Inde Navarrette’s performance in Obsession. They describe it as a uniquely disturbing and often darkly funny horror movie, establishing director Curry Barker as a promising talent.
Last week, the movie Obsession not only earned 100 times its production cost, but it also became the lowest-budget film to reach number one at the box office since Paranormal Activity in 2009. Paranormal Activity is well-known for being made with just $15,000, then becoming a huge global success with $193 million in earnings and breaking several records.
Although Obsession didn’t achieve blockbuster success, it’s become popular through positive recommendations and effective online marketing, continuing to draw audiences even after its initial release.
The horror film Obsession is a surprising box office hit, proving that original, low-budget movies can still attract large audiences. Its popularity continues to grow as people share positive reviews and return to theaters, suggesting its disturbing and unique story will keep viewers coming back for more.
