Obsession Box Office Continues Unheard-Of Growth With Shocking Week 3 Boost

Obsession must have wished for box office success on a One Wish Willow.

The new horror film Obsession, directed by YouTube comedian Curry Barker, tells the story of a young man whose wish for his crush to love him above all others has terrifying consequences. While it opened with a respectable $17.2 million on May 15th, it has quickly become a surprising success. In its second weekend, the film’s earnings jumped by 39.3%, marking the smallest drop for a horror movie opening in over 2,000 theaters – a new record!

According to Deadline, the movie Obsession is expected to make $28.5 million at the box office this weekend. That’s a 19% increase from last weekend, which is rare for a widely released film, particularly in the horror genre. The film is also predicted to surpass $100 million domestically, making it Focus Features’ highest-grossing North American release, exceeding the earnings of 2019’s Downton Abbey.

The success of Obsession is particularly surprising given the challenges it faced. Its second weekend in theaters coincided with the Memorial Day holiday, a time when most movies see a big increase in viewers. However, it also had to compete with the new horror film Backrooms from A24, which is predicted to have one of the biggest opening weekends of the year, even surpassing the first weekends of popular 2026 releases like Scream 7 and The Devil Wears Prada 2.
