Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film, the political thriller A House of Dynamite, is receiving positive reviews, with critics and experts alike noting how realistic it feels. It will be released on October 24th.
The film A House of Dynamite, featuring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, portrays the U.S. government’s reaction to a nuclear missile headed for Chicago. The story focuses on the intense 18-minute window to prevent millions of casualties, and experts suggest this frightening scenario is realistically possible. Jennifer Knox from The Union of Concerned Scientists praised the film as ‘required viewing,’ noting its accuracy in reflecting real-world possibilities.
According to Knox, a missile attack between Russia and the United States could happen with very little warning. He explained that a missile could travel between the two countries in just a matter of hours – essentially during a lunch break. This rapid pace puts immense pressure on leaders when making critical decisions during a nuclear crisis.
Knox discussed the critical role of the president in a nuclear crisis, explaining that the power to act ultimately rests with one person. She highlighted how the film explores the challenges of decision-making under such intense pressure, particularly when there’s disagreement about the best course of action. Ultimately, she emphasized that even with differing opinions, the final, most important choices would be made by a single individual’s assessment of the situation.
Knox explained that if the U.S. were believed to be under attack, the Pentagon would give the president various responses, even including options for a nuclear strike. Importantly, the president doesn’t need to ask for advice before authorizing a launch.
She explained that “A House of Dynamite” reveals the hidden and highly controlled system that governs our lives daily – a system constantly ready to launch a nuclear war. She argued that we’re asked to blindly trust this system to protect us, but the world is incredibly delicate. Despite all our preparation, spending, and weapons, we’ll always be at risk as long as our safety depends on a system that could cause massive destruction. Ultimately, she believes humanity can’t continue to coexist with nuclear weapons indefinitely.
A House of Dynamite Earns Rave Reviews Ahead of Netflix Streaming Debut
Despite being a chillingly realistic political thriller, A House of Dynamite is also proving to be very enjoyable. The film first premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September, earning a Golden Lion nomination. It was released in U.S. cinemas on October 10th and will be available to stream on Netflix later this month.
The film has been well-received, earning an 81% approval rating from critics and a 75% audience score as of today. Reviewers highlighted its realistic tension, describing it as a thrilling and intensely gripping, yet disturbing, movie crafted by director Bigelow.
A House of Dynamite will be available on Netflix on Oct. 24.
