The 2013 film Now You See Me is full of surprises, building to a final reveal where Mark Ruffalo’s character, Dylan Rhodes, is shown to be the one pulling all the strings. Just like a great magic trick, the movie left audiences wanting a sequel, which arrived in 2016 as Now You See Me 2. The series will continue with a third installment, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, scheduled for release in November 2025.
I loved how Now You See Me ended – it really made me question everything I thought I knew! It’s the kind of movie that begs to be watched again, because you start noticing all these little details you missed the first time around, and they suddenly make so much sense. Thinking back on it, though, it’s almost unbelievable that more people didn’t figure out Agent Rhodes was the fifth horseman right then and there – the clues were actually pretty obvious in retrospect!
Agent Rhodes Apparently Performs A Magic Trick Halfway Into Now You See Me
Given that Agent Rhodes has a secret identity as a magician, it’s important that the movie Now You See Me doesn’t show him performing magic before his abilities are revealed. Surprisingly, though, Rhodes is shown doing a card trick relatively early in the film.
As Rhodes and Interpol agent Dray fly to New Orleans chasing the Four Horsemen, Dray tries a simple magic trick – asking “Is this your card?” – to gauge Rhodes’s reaction. He’s not impressed. After a little misdirection, Rhodes reveals that his card has mysteriously ended up in the lap of a nearby passenger.
Although the movie Now You See Me doesn’t directly state it, it’s likely Rhodes was the one who moved the card in that scene. Several hints throughout the film strongly suggest this is the case.
It’s very unlikely Dray accidentally flung the card and had it land exactly where it did without realizing it, or the incident being caught on camera. A more reasonable explanation is that the magician sitting beside her secretly threw the card – something an illusionist with his skill could easily do.
Rhodes seems a bit suspicious himself when he tries to imply Dray was the one who made the card fly, casually saying, “Nice shuffle.” It feels like he’s trying to distract her – and the audience – from what really happened, much like a magician performing a trick. If he hadn’t been involved in moving the card, he probably wouldn’t have felt the need to explain it at all.
The key to the trick lies in what Rhodes does while it’s being performed. A central idea in the movie Now You See Me is that the true deception is always happening elsewhere. As Dray sets up the cards, Rhodes cleverly brings up an important detail: the possibility of a fifth member of the Horsemen. This distraction, like a dazzling burst of glitter, gives Rhodes the opportunity to secretly take and throw the card without anyone noticing.
Now You See Me Drops Other Clues Earlier In The Movie
The elaborate plane trick in Now You See Me is a key moment, strongly suggesting that Rhodes is the fifth horseman – it’s the first time the magic seems like the real explanation, rather than a simple trick. However, the movie does contain subtler clues earlier on that hint at the truth.
During the questioning after the bank robbery in Now You See Me, two subtle clues hint at what’s to come. First, Merritt points out the agent’s troubled relationship with his father, which later connects to the revelation that Rhodes is motivated by revenge for his father, Lionel Shrike. However, because the audience doesn’t know Shrike’s story yet, this connection isn’t immediately obvious.
The second hint appears during the interview with Étienne. Rhodes intentionally makes the suspect start pretending to play the violin by saying the word “bullsh*t.” Rhodes knew this word would cause that reaction and did it on purpose, but it’s easy to miss the first time you watch the scene. It seems natural that a frustrated investigator might swear like that when they’re not getting anywhere with a case.
Looking at the key phrase, the character’s troubled relationship with their father, and the playing card found on the plane, things start to feel inconsistent. Putting these clues together might help sharp viewers realize that Agent Rhodes is the mastermind behind everything in Now You See Me.
