The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up for a huge crossover event, similar in scale to Avengers: Endgame, but one moment from that film remains unmatched. With Avengers: Doomsday set to release on December 18th, Marvel and Disney are going all out. The movie will feature the return of popular actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, and will also incorporate characters from the X-Men, making it a truly massive superhero gathering.
Disney and Marvel have been very careful about revealing details about the upcoming Doomsday movie. We haven’t learned what Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., is up to, if the Russo brothers will include cameos from other heroes, or how it all connects to the Avengers: Secret Wars film planned for 2027. While many questions about Doomsday remain unanswered, one thing is certain: it will be hard to surpass the most memorable moments from Endgame.
Avengers: Endgame delivered many unforgettable scenes, like the portal sequence and Captain America battling his past self. The film represented the epic conclusion of over ten years of Marvel movies and was packed with powerful, defining moments. While the upcoming Doomsday promises a large cast and a complex multiverse story that could rival some of those scenes, it’s unlikely to surpass the impact of Captain America lifting Mjolnir.
Avengers: Doomsday Will Never Top Captain America Wielding Mjolnir In Endgame
Whatever happens in the new Avengers movie, it’s unlikely to top the moment Captain America first lifted Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, in Avengers: Endgame. This isn’t a criticism of the new film or the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general, but a testament to how incredibly powerful and surprising that scene was. It was truly a breathtaking moment.
If you saw Endgame in a movie theater, you can probably recall how amazing this scene was. The audience cheered so enthusiastically and for so long that many people didn’t realize Thor quietly said, “I knew it,” until they watched it again. Even just seeing Mjolnir slowly rise off the ground caused a huge reaction in my theater – I still remember it clearly, even seven years later. It was an incredibly exciting moment, especially considering it happened during a massive, thirty-minute battle that determined the fate of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Seeing Captain America lift Mjolnir felt so impactful because Marvel had carefully prepared audiences for it over many years. The Thor films established Mjolnir’s legendary status and the idea that only the worthy could wield it. Avengers: Age of Ultron hinted that Steve Rogers might be worthy, and fans then had to wait four years until Endgame to finally see it happen. The moment itself was built up as a crucial turning point during the battle with Thanos, when things looked hopeless. The only scene that rivaled it in terms of excitement was Tony Stark’s iconic declaration, “I am Iron Man,” while holding all the Infinity Stones.
Many fans consider Steve Rogers lifting Mjolnir and teaming up with Thor to fight Thanos the most iconic moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a perfect payoff to a storyline that had been building for four years, a key moment in Endgame‘s battle, and launched an incredible fight sequence. It felt like a special tribute to Marvel fans, and it’s hard to imagine a scene ever topping it.
While Avengers: Doomsday will likely have some surprises, it’s hard to believe any will be as impactful as Captain America lifting Mjolnir. The interaction between the Avengers and the X-Men should be fun, but it won’t carry the same emotional weight as Endgame. Even a major moment in the fight against Doctor Doom won’t feel as earned, because Doomsday hasn’t built up to it the way Endgame did with Captain America and Mjolnir.
Avengers: Doomsday Has The Potential For Moments That Are Almost As Good As Endgame’s Mjolnir Scene
While it might not surpass the iconic image of Captain America lifting Mjolnir, Avengers: Doomsday still promises several exciting scenes. As we’ve heard, the film is expected to deliver some fantastic moments featuring actors from the X-Men franchise. For instance, a trailer for Doomsday showed James Marsden’s Cyclops using his optic blast to its full potential, which could easily become one of the most talked-about scenes.
There’s a lot of potential for amazing moments in the upcoming film, Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. is a fantastic pick to play Doctor Doom, and the directors, the Russo brothers, could make him an even more compelling villain than Thanos. Chris Evans returning as Captain America also opens the door for powerful emotional scenes and action-packed fights. Plus, the Russos are known for surprises, and they likely have something unexpected planned that will be the highlight of the movie.
Although it might not reach the iconic level of Captain America lifting Mjolnir, Doomsday should still be a memorable cinematic experience. Plus, events in Doomsday could set up even larger storylines for Secret Wars, similar to how Age of Ultron led into the epic conclusion of Endgame. It has a lot to live up to, but Avengers: Doomsday appears to be on track to deliver something truly special, potentially rivaling Endgame in scope and impact.
