Nintendo is planning a fourth modern movie release, expected after The Legend of Zelda film. This marks a significant return to cinema for the company, which hasn’t had a major movie release since the poorly received Super Mario Bros. film in 1993. The success of Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie has paved the way for Nintendo to bring more of its popular game franchises to the big screen.
A new rumor suggests that Nintendo is planning a Donkey Kong movie, potentially releasing around 2028. According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, sources indicate this project is already in development. If true, it would continue Nintendo’s trend of adapting its popular games for the big screen, following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a planned Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and The Legend of Zelda film.
Donkey Kong, Nintendo’s famous ape, was voiced by Seth Rogen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. When Rogen wasn’t mentioned in the cast list for the next Mario Movie, many fans wondered if Nintendo is planning a separate animated movie starring his character.

In early October, industry insider Daniel Richtman mentioned a potential Donkey Kong movie was being considered, though he didn’t offer any details. If the report is accurate, a Donkey Kong film would be the furthest along in development of Nintendo’s planned movies, following The Legend of Zelda, which is currently scheduled for release in May 2027.
Seth Rogen has expressed interest in a standalone Donkey Kong movie, suggesting the Donkey Kong Country video games could provide a great story.
Get ready for a new Mario adventure on the big screen! Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment are releasing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on April 3, 2026. The film will follow Mario and friends as they embark on a space-themed journey and face a new threat in Bowser Jr.
What Does Nintendo’s Theatrical Future Look Like?

For years, Nintendo has been very protective of its creative ideas and hesitant to let others adapt them into movies or shows. But now, things are changing. Nintendo, the company behind the Switch 2, is realizing that working with partners, especially in Hollywood, could open up exciting new possibilities.
The franchise has expanded through major movie adaptations and partnerships with Universal for various theme park attractions.
It’s still uncertain if the current popularity of Mario Maker will last, or if Nintendo plans to continue supporting it long-term. However, given the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – which earned over $1 billion worldwide – it would be a smart move for Nintendo to create more games and content based on their popular franchises.
After releasing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie next year, Nintendo plans to launch its first movie that isn’t about Mario. This new film will be a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie directed by Wes Ball and produced with Sony Pictures. It will also be Nintendo’s first live-action film since the unsuccessful Super Mario Bros. movie from the early 1990s.
If the Zelda movie does well, it could significantly expand Nintendo’s options beyond animation. They’d be able to explore live-action adaptations of other popular franchises, such as Metroid.
As a huge Nintendo fan, I’m really excited about the potential for more animated movies! The Mario Movie was just the beginning, and there’s so much more they could explore. I’d love to see a Donkey Kong movie, or even something based on Luigi’s Mansion or Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Nintendo has a whole universe of characters and stories just waiting to be brought to life on the big screen!
Beyond the popular Mario series, Nintendo owns many other franchises that would make great animated shows or movies, including Star Fox, Kirby, and Pikmin.
Nintendo has everything it needs to build a connected universe of stories, similar to Marvel or Star Wars. Hopefully, this will eventually result in a fantastic movie bringing together all of the characters from Super Smash Bros.
