Nintendo is planning several movies in the coming years. Following the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which earned over $1 billion globally, Hollywood is very interested in adapting more Nintendo games. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to come out in April 2026, and The Legend of Zelda movie will follow in May 2027. Fans are excited about the possibility of even more films featuring Nintendo’s beloved characters. With its extensive collection of games, Nintendo now has the potential to compete with major franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars.
Nintendo announced during an investor presentation, as reported by IGN, that they’re working to establish a regular schedule for releasing new content. They mentioned their plans for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and The Legend of Zelda, and stated they’re also planning future films, though they didn’t say which games they’ll adapt into movies.
What Films Could Nintendo Be Developing?

Nintendo
Nintendo hasn’t announced any specific movies yet, but several are reportedly in the works. Universal Pictures is likely planning to expand the world of The Super Mario Bros. with spin-offs, potentially including a Luigi’s Mansion film. They’re also said to be developing an animated Donkey Kong movie starring Seth Rogen, which seems promising after the success of Donkey Kong Bananza earlier this year. Plus, with Yoshi appearing at the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Yoshi’s Island movie could also be happening. We’ll probably learn more about Universal’s Nintendo plans after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie comes out.
Beyond Mario, Nintendo has many other game franchises that could become movies or TV shows. Games like Metroid and Fire Emblem seem well-suited for live-action adaptations, while Kirby and Star Fox would probably work better as animated projects. Nintendo recently released a short animated film featuring Pikmin, hinting they might be planning a full animated series. Splatoon and Animal Crossing are also strong contenders for becoming animated films.
As a movie critic, I’ve been watching Nintendo’s move into film with a lot of interest, and it reminds me a lot of Marvel before Kevin Feige brought everything together. Nintendo is essentially licensing out its properties – think The Legend of Zelda now being developed at Sony Pictures. It’s a bit ironic, isn’t it? Sony makes the PlayStation, which is Nintendo’s biggest rival! This approach, while potentially opening doors, unfortunately probably means we shouldn’t expect a big crossover movie like a Super Smash Bros. film. With different studios handling each property, coordinating something that massive seems highly unlikely.
